i tried with disk management, right click the format. I get some error saying like i dont have permission to do this operation or i can restart to enable. I restarted and still the same thing. The only way to changing to fat is by formatting right? Otherwise partitioning would require the reovable drive to show up on my computer. Man this is a strange problem, please help. Thanks

Under "Computer Management" check the drive letter assigned to the card reader; if any other drive has the same drive letter, it will not show up in My Computer. You will have to manually change the drive letter assigned to the reader to one not used by any other drive.

Along with what F1 said, check the Device Manager and make sure there are no yellow exclamation marks or any other reportings indicating a related problem.

One other possibility is that a background process of some kind could be the reason, not very common but a possibility. What are the programs/process running in the background that you do not need and could close? I would suggest opening Task Manager and ending all processes that are not in use or system critical, pretty much kill all processes listed under the current user name except Explorer.exe and TaskMgr.exe, if in doubt, ask ok?

Other than these, I would try removing XP installed drivers by uninstalling the device under Device Manager, detach the drive then rebooting the system and re-connect the drive to see if it helped.

naw, you shouldn't have to reformat the card, there's a utility that will convert the file system called drive converter or similar sounding app built into windows disk managment. Are you logging in as administrator? you should be logged in as administrator prior to trying these changes. I haven't been using windows xp long enough to know where "ALL" the policy's are adjusted from so I haven't located what I referenced about the sytem removable media yet.. Another thing to try that should give you full access to your files, if you have a firewire or USB cable that came with the camera, try connecting the camera to the PC/laptop via the usb or firewire cable, then use the camera's software to download your files/ then re-format the card with the camera via the camera menu on the lcd, then try the card in the computer again. Reformatting with the camera will restore the file system and should remove any volume/directory permissions that may have been set by a pc but it will not change "group" "user" or system policies that might be set on your laptop
