Thread: Webroot Spysweeper

    Webroot Spysweeper

My problem is not with spyware itself but the resident scanning program i've been using.
For quite some time I've been using Webroot Spysweeper and have always been impressed right up until back in June I decided to subscribe again and download the latest verion (6.1.0 build 128)
To do a full system scan it takes 50+hours to complete. The old version I had didn't take this long.
I know this version had issues with AVG and Anti-vir so I'm using Avast. I've tried to contact Webroot support regarding this but from what I read and have now experienced, they do not get back to their customers but instead email me broken links with descriptions the have nothing to do with my problem.
I'm pretty sure it's not a spyware issue causing this because I'm pretty good about keeping this PC clean by using the instructions in the Sticky on a monthly basis.

Just curious if anyone has experienced and/or resolved this same problem.

    System Specs:
    Win XP SP3
    IE8
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.20 Ghz
    2GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE
    150 GB SATA HD
    Avast anti-virus free edition
    Comodo firewall free edition

Honestly I hate to say this but I would dump this program. I have seen this issue noted several places and honestly have not seen a solution.
I myself used this program years ago but finally found it instrusive and really not worth the money. If you use the programs in the sticky on a regular basis I and do not find any problems then I would say uninstall Webroot and be done with it. No program should take 50+ hours to do a scan. If they cannot get back immediately to their paying customers with quality help then they are not worth the money.

My advice concerning the programs in the sticky, I certainly would run them more often than monthly. That really isn't enough. MBA-M should be run weekly at the very least, using the Quick Scan. If the Quick scan finds something then update the program again and do a full scan. Remove all items found. Always update the program before using as it updates sometimes multiple times daily.

thanks for your advice, I use the programs in the sticky as a secondary scan and have in the past used Webroots as a resident/real-time scanner and did full weekly scans as well.
But now it takes too long and I can't get a full scan done unless I'm gone for 3 days straight.

Would the subscription to MBAM be worth the money?

Honestly, the free version is really just fine, unless you want everything done automatically then the paid version would be what you want. It is an excellent program, even when they have "blips" as they recently did with a false positive causing problems but that was fixed in less than a day.
Here is what I use, ALL free versions by the way, Avira, the built in Windows Firewall, MBA-M, SpywareBlaster (an absolute must have) and Spybot. Haven't had an infection, invasion...nothing in well over two years. Had ONE email this spring which contained a virus and of course Avira DOES NOT have email scanning, but the moment I opened the mail Avira popped up with "virus found" and it was removed. I do visit some questionable sites when researching malware on infected computers and have come away with absolutely nothing to cause harm on my computer.
