Yes and no...My 4x4 has LSD - but only in the rear, and I haven't tried it in the winter...my dakota had 4x4 but had open diffs for front and back....

rear will atleast keep you from sitting at a stop sign and turning in small circles when you try to take off..

no, you'd be surprised...it's even easier to do donuts...I know from experience in the rain already...

but with alot of open differential 4x4s one front wheel and one rear wheel on the same side will pull and make you go around (turn like a bull dozer)

Yeah, you just have to know how to drive...

isn't 4x4 to compensate for lack of talent?

I find that it is a lot easier to break the rear end loose on corners when you have an LSD. I know this because my old 1990 suburban had a locker in the rear and I could easily get it nearly sideways going around the corners ( winters are long up here so you have to have something to keep you entertained). When we sold it and bought a newer one it didn't have the G80 option and took quite a bit of gas to break the rear end loose.
on corners, its easier to get the vehicle to slide because both tires will spin.
with an open differrencial, the outside tire just rolls along and keeps the vehicle from sliding while the inside tire spins.
With open differrncial, you get a skid steer type turn like a bulldozer. one side does nothing while the other sidee spins you around in a circle. with a locker or lsd, the force is more balanced.

Yup, you pretty much nailed it on the head, except for one thing....Limited slip is REALLY different from a locker. An LSD will only TRY to make both tires spin...it will still act the same as an open differential.
With a true locker on the other hand, both tires will spin no matter what.

yea, I know the difference in a locker and an lsd. but if traction is reasonably the same (both tires on ice) they act the same. A locker, you can jack one tire in the air and it wont turn until the other tire turns.
