Installed vista ultimate edition and on shutdown it just sits there saying shutting down. If I start in safe mode it shuts down ok.
Have tried disabling usb connected items but makes no difference.
Can anyone tell me what to try next?

You actually need to see what is running at Start Up...Give us more information on the computer itself....hard drive size, how much RAM installed, etc. What anti-virus program are you running? Did you check to be certain that your system was actually capable of running Vista? From all I have read, if the computer is MORE than a year old it is very likely that it is NOT capable of running Vista satisfactorily.
I worked on a two week old computer for two days this week that actually came with Vista on it and had major problems with the "new, improved, more secure" Windows Mail Program and, my feeling anyway, Microsoft should have waited to get the bugs out before rolling this thing out. Too many are having too many problems and it has only been officially out since the end of January.
I agree. Vista was pushed out way too fast. If you just bought this computer, call the manufacturer of the computer. You shouldn't be having many problems if you just bought it....I've dealt with a few people who just bought a new computer with vista and modems are working, neither are network cards, etc...

Vista itself is fine (as an O/S)
now we are just waiting to software to be compiled with VISTA in mind..
not how he says he installed it...
you should hit the windows key and type MSCONFIG
then tell us whats in startup and while hiding microsoft services tell us what is there....

Sorry Star, but I disagree..it is NOT fine, it is causing many people major problems and the one I worked on yesterday (a brand NEW computer that came with VISTA installed and NOT an upgrade) was having problems with Windows Mail...one of MS's own programs... and while searching for the answer I found 100's and I do mean 100's of complaints on multiple websites from people with exactly the same problems the computer I worked on was having.Vista itself is fine (as an O/S)

If "we" whomever your "we" is...are waiting for software to be complied with VISTA in mind then they shouldn't have put the program out there until all was ready.
Microsofts own website gives very little information and many bits are only partial..."Try the troubleshooter" which brings you right back to the page you had just left...no troubleshooter there and no troubleshooter within portions of Vista, other than the line Try the Troubleshooter and if it IS there then the link should tell you how to get there.
No, he doesn't say how he installed it, that is why I posted the questions I did.
Hello Froddle,
This does sound like a problem caused by a startup process/service as that is the only logical thing between a Safe Mode and Normal mode. There is always the possibility of some sort of a malware infection but Autoruns log file would clue us in on it if that was the case.Installed vista ultimate edition and on shutdown it just sits there saying shutting down. If I start in safe mode it shuts down ok.
So, if this is still an issue, please download and run Autoruns following the instructions on this post. Then please attach its log file to your next post.

Reinstalled windows XP. I think I will wait until MS have sorted their problems.
For info intel processor @3.2 250 gb hdd, 1024 Mb ram (advent T9204) 18 months old
Thanks all

Hi, you need to go to msconfig, services, and disable all of them. then, enable them a few at the time. I found that on my pc, the WLAN configuration was preventing vista from properly shut down.
good luck
I know it's an old post, and the original poster has concluded it, by installing another opperating system, however; belloso2, The propper way would be to disable "KNOWN" items, one at a time. Testing each change~ (to ensure that you didn't cause any issues by disabling that startup item) ~by rebooting, doing normal stuff on your PC, then trying to shut down after testing. If it doesn't shut down, that startup item wasn't the cause, go back and re-enable it.. If you encountered an issue, that one thing you disabled can be quickly re-enabled etc.. Then move on to the next startup item rinse repete etc....
It's good that you were able to sort your shutdown issue down to ONE startup entry ~"WLAN"
Thanks for posting the culprit, you might try going a step further; maybe forward the information to microsoft to let them know what is going on, perhaps it's something they can fix and include in an update.
