DVD+RW Drive won't recognize recordable media

I have two DVD drives on my computer: an HP DVD+RW drive and a Toshiba DVD-ROM drive.

Yesterday, my DVD+RW drive stopped being able to write to or read from non ROM discs. I know the discs are fine because I burned one that my computer couldn't using my friend's drive. This burned disc could not be read by the DVD+RW drive, but it could be read by the DVD-ROM drive. It was able to read normal DVDs and CDs, however. I don't know about CD-R or CD-RW as I don't have any.

In the past hour, it has stopped being able to read anything. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, but that didn't do anything.

    Any ideas?

New update: It now reads regular DVDs and CDs SOME of the time. I was watching a DVD last night, though, and it stopped being able to read it halfway through, so I had to switch to my other drive. It still never loads DVD+Rs.

If you have not physically removed the drive or add new ones to this system, I'd have to say this drive is likely to be on its way out!
Try replacing its data cable with a working one to see if it was a case of problematic ribbon cable or loose connection at either end.

If that didn't help at all then check to see if it is still under warranty, I would check with the seller/vendor. Even if the drive appears to be working time to time or reading certain types of media, it still wouldn't mean the drive is in an acceptable working condition, in short it is defective/faulty and should be replaced.

This is the drive that came with my PC in May of '04, so it really shouldn't be dying already, but I'm not sure what the warranty on it was. My guess is probaby that it was up in May of '06, though. I'll check on that, though.

HP drives with light scrieb are TERRIBLE.

they work great for a very short while....

as you energize the gas in the laser diode it breaks down

when you BURN it will break down ALOT faster

and if you EVER use the light scrieb feture it'll eat your diode alive!!!
