    External Drive

Acquired an external Drive purely for the sole purpose of backing up data in the event of PC going down.
First of all I tried to format the drive but when I try to backup data I recve a msg saying that disk in the drive is not formatted.
On another occasion I rcve msg saying that windows was unable to complete the format.
I also recve msg saying that disk in drive cannot be formatted.

To put it mildly I am very confused and wonder if anyone can provide me with a solution which might resolve the above mentioned problems

    Thanks

If you are unable to format at all, make sure that the jumper is set to Master or no jumper for the external (that is if you put it together yourself). Most that you buy should have some software with it....

If you put it together and it doesn't work in windows, try formatting it using the windows CD or an fdisk..
