    computer slow(Resolved)

    Hi there,
I just went from ISDN to ADSL and was so happy about internet going faster and could finally download some stuff and watch some shows online.
I THINK my problems started with a quicktime update, and now I have a bunch of programs in the bar at the bottom that weren't there before.
I followed all the steps before making a HJT scan (except Windows Defender, not possible) but they all came out clean.
    I have windows 2k sp4.

Thanks for your time and help!

Well . . .Your HijackThis log looks clean as well. Just a couple updater items that are related to legitimate programs, but some consider to be mild spyware. No real worries.

    -- I do not see a resident Anti-virus program....
-- What are the new buttons?

Judy should be back soon and can help you pare back some startup items as well as dope out the new additions to system tray.

I will reiterate what PP has said, you are not running an anti-virus program AND you are not running a firewall. Yet, you state in your post
...and could finally download some stuff
Very dangerous without an active anti-virus program and a firewall.
You don't state what these new
bunch of programs in the bar at the bottom that weren't there before
are...just place your cursor over each one and you should get the name of each. Please post them here.
You are running a large number of unnecessary items related to your Creative Soundblaster Live! Soundcard.

    I would like you to first go to this link;
Download and install one of the free anti-virus programs listed there, for easy usage I would recommend AVG Free but the choice is yours. Download it, install it, update and enable it.
Do the same with one of the free firewalls noted there too.
Then go to the link that PP gave you and follow the steps given there.
Once you have completed all then run a new HJT scan and post back here with that new log and the names of all those new programs you see in the task bar. I don't see anything in your log which would indicate that Quicktime has brought in a lot of new items.

    Sorry, I know better now

I guess that was like asking a Doctor to fix my sprain while playing Russian Roulette, eh? My first downloading stop should have been here.

I've now got AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm.
New things I don't recognise in the add/remove programs are :
Futuremark Measurement Services & Mail Frontier Desktop
but I guess they are part of AVG or Zone. Besides that there are about 50 hotfixes there, is that normal?
    The other programs are :

    creative Mixer
    quicktime
    exif launcher
    disc detector
    winzip quickpick
    HPdeskjet 640c
    wifi adapter
    rainledar
    EN

I looked and could see the startup programs but not how or if I should change them.

    startup programs.txt

    Here is the new HJT

    hijackthis.txt

One More thing, I have sometimes been getting "Low on virtual memory" warnings since the computer slowed down.

Thanks for having a look, I appreciate it.

Well as PhilliePhan said there really isn't anything bad showing in your log.
    Here is the info on the various programs in Add/Remove that you don't recognize and those in your Taskbar;
Those two programs in Add/Remove have absolutely nothing to do with the AVG anti-virus or the Zone Alarm Firewall. You probably just never noticed these before.

Futuremark Utility is an overclocking utility for ATI and nVidia cards.
Overclocking is the process of forcing a component to run at a higher clock rate than it was designed for or was designated by the manufacturer.

Mail Frontier Desktop is a program which says it Detects and reports phishing scams in your email and is a spam blocker. This is not a free program, it costs around $30 from what I have found.
Neither of these programs would have come in with something else, they had to be downloaded by you or another user of the computer. And as I said the Mail Frontier program is not free, it would have had to have been paid for in order to install.

    Here are the programs showing on the taskbar, all are legitimate, had absolutely nothing to do with Quicktime update, except Quicktime itself;
Really none of these need to be running, except maybe the printer for ease and speed of use.
creative Mixer has to do with your sound card.
quicktime is of course Quicktime player
exif launcher is the usb mass storage driver
disc detector used to control settings if you want your CD to play upon insertion
winzip quickpick gives you instant access to Winzip
HPdeskjet 640c this is your printer
wifi adapter this is the adapter for your wireless router
    rainledar is a calendar
EN >>>I have no idea what this is, are you absolutely certain this is what showed?
    Give us the specs on your computer;

    Right Click on My Computer.

Choose Properties. The first page you see will be the System Page I guess you would call it.

The bottom bit of information will tell you what Processor you have and the total amount of RAM installed. Please give us that.

Then open My Computer and Right Click on "C" Drive and choose properties and when that opens it will tell you how large the drive is and how much space is remaining.

This might give us some insight on those Low memory warnings.

Since I am a novice at this,I always try to see what I can see.One that stood out to me was
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [REGSHAVE] C:\Program Files\REGSHAVE\REGSHAVE.EXE /AUTORUN
    as well as
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    and
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Rainlendar2] C:\Program Files\Rainlendar2\Rainlendar2.exe

I'm sure that Judy will find a few others.I do know that some programs should not be allowed to run at startup, and the people here will be able to advise on the programs to set up your system to optimum running performance.

Thanks for the input Phoenix. We are going to get to the disabling of unnecessary starts as soon as WyrdSister gets to go through the list I posted. You are right on with those you have listed by the way.

As far as the EN goes... This shows on my computer when I have the English keyboard set up. It switches to DE when I hit the shift key and the alt key at the same time because I have the german keyboard set up on my computer. I think this is the same with your computer. Do you type in another language ever? I leave it up on my computer so I know what Im typeing in but if you do not like it then you can disable it.

Sorry about the EN thing. It's on all the computers here and I just thought it was as basic as the clock. It is a german keyboard but I don't have to switch back and forth, I just type English on the German layout. Guess I don't need that.
Computer says I have 130,592 kb of RAM
    Capacity is 29.2 GB
    used 15 GB
    free 14GB

Now with the AVG and Zone, it is even slower. SSSOOOOO slow to start.
