    Camera question

Anyone know of a point and shoot camera that shoots in 300 ppi? I realize that you can easily print anything in 300 ppi but this photo contest that I want to enter requires the photo itself be 300 ppi uncompressed.

I tried calling Canon (my camera is an A530) and Staples (company running contest) and got no helpful info. Actually Staples said I needed to get a "high end camera". I ask them how many amateur photographers they knew had high end cameras

BTW, my 5 mega pixel shoots in 180 ppi.

    Thanks for any suggestions

    Hi Hey,

I don't know much about the PPI (pixel per inch) feature but the info on this link could be helpful. The PPI of the camera appears to be related to the brand, here is a summary from that link:

    NIKON - 300 ppi
    CANON - 180 ppi
    PENTAX - 72 ppi

Heylinder, Your camera shoots much larger than that. Have looked at the specs for your camera you should easily be able to shoot a picture that is set for a pixel count of 2,592 x 1,944 then you could get a picture with 300ppi for printing at 8.6 x 6.5 inches. You will have to check your camera's instruction book to get the exact setting needed to come up with this pixel count. That ppi is actually referring to the print resolution and 8.6 x 6.5 inches is the largest photo you could print with that pixel count on your settings without losing quality.
I believe what Staples wants is for people NOT to compress the file they are uploading, because if you compress the file then the picture will lose quality.
I can't find anywhere on their website stating how large "inch wise" the photo must be...
Really the only camera which can't come up with 300ppi is a 1 megapixel camera all the other megapixels can produce a picture capable of 300ppi but the size of the printed photo to maintain that 300ppi will vary. For instance, a 2mp camera can produce a 300ppi picture but for that to be maintained the print size can be no larger than 4.0 x 5.3 inches. While an 8 mp camera can produce a 300ppi print that can be as large as nearly 8.5 x 11 inches.

PPI can be set after taking the picture by setting the resolution to 300 in your post processing software, If you are using photoshop elements, it would be Alt+I then R and then you get the Image resize tool, set the resolution to 300, then if they want a specific pixel x pixel or inch x inch width you can set that in the boxes above resolution.

BTW, the entry requirements for the hometown contest allows submissions in .gif, or .jpg, both use compression!

To avoid quality losses due to the compression that these formats use, don't resize the pixel width and don't resample the image. When you save the final image, save as .jpg and use the highest quality setting 10.

I always keep my camera set at 2592x1944 because it gives me more options to edit It still shoots at 180ppi thou. I also realize that 300 ppi is for printing. I wonder if maybe the rules were written a little bit incorrectly

they're probly getting a KICK back from the N, word company knowing all the canons default to 180ppi, I'd call them and scream at them through the phone that PPI has nothing to do with the image! it can be changed at will without changing the image. A camera has a set number of pixels, the PPI only has to do with how it is displayed or printed.

Although, buying another camera would be cool, I would do that too Here's something to try, does your camera shoot raw? shoot it in raw, then save it as 300ppi jpg without resizing.
