Unhappy help with hijack this log

All of a sudden Windows XP hangs at shutdown. It says windows is shutting down, but it doesn't ever power off. I have to manually power off by holding finger on power button.

I religiously use CCleaner, malwarebytes, superantispyware and have AVG antivirus installed. I also have an external drive, which happily I had just backed up my documents right before problem started.

Here is my hijack this log:

You have portions of an old Norton/Symantec program RUNNING on there. You need to get rid of this. Download and run the tool below.
    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

You also have Advanced System Optimizer 3 installed and running. There is absolutely no reason to use a tool like this. It can cause many more problems than it is worth. Uninstall it.

TotalMedia Backup & Record is also running all the time. It could be this program also. If it is doing a backup during shutdown then this could also freeze the system. Try turning it off and shut down.

Unless your SUPERAntiSpyware is NOT the paid version it does nothing by running all the time except run. It offers no protection unless you pay for it. It does good job scanning most of the time but otherwise, turn it off.

Finally, AVG is NOT one of the most highly recommended anti-virus programs, in fact it finishes near the bottom on many, if not most tests. I would recommend that you go with another, better, highly recommended FREE av program, Avira. It is light, works extremely well and is not a high resource consumer.

Don't know that you can call me an expert, that's for sure! Do all of that and then post back. Did your most recent MBA-M scan show anything?

    Unhappy

I ran the norton removal tool.
    I uninstalled advanced system optimizer3.
I removed AVG and installed Avira.
I exited from Totalmedia backup and exited from superantispyware (I have the free version) and tried to shut down.

Hung again on "windows is shutting down".

to answer your question, day before yesterday, when I ran MalwarebytesAM, nothing found. today I also ran the microsoft suspicious software thingee and nothing found there as well...

    What do I do next?

Ok, do this test with msconfig.
First go to Start, run, msconfig. Click the Start Up tab. Remove all check marks from everything there...make a note of all listed there though.
Then reboot and then shut down. If shut down proceeds without problems then problem lies with one of those. Go back to msconfig and put a check mark in the top one. Shut down, reboot, shut down again. If it still proceeds without a freeze then follow the same procedure until you find the one that is causing the problem.
If none of those make a difference then the next step with msconfig would be go into the Services Tab. Put a check mark in Hide All Microsoft Services. When those are hidden all you will see are 3rd party services, disable them all and then reboot, shutdown...etc. Follow the same steps until you find the culprit.
Yes, it is a long, drawn out procedure but likely the only way you will find out.
If none of this works then come back and I will try to find other steps.

unchecked everything from msconfig. rebooted (had to manually shut down) started back up, checked to make sure everything still uncheckd and tried to shut down. shutdown still hung.

hid microsoft services and unchecked everything else. rebooted (had to manually shut down. started back up, checked to make sure only microsoft services were there, hid them again and tried to shut down. it still hangs. in fact it is still showing "windows is shutting down" even as we speak (I am typing on a laptop, sitting right next to the malfunctioning PC).

    Next step?

Do you close all of your programs before you shut down or do you just hit Start, Turn off computer, Turn Off?

I understand why you are asking. Does that include signing out of email, in addition to closing the email client? Just to be sure we are covering that base, I just turned the computer back on, made sure nothing was on. Since everything is unchecked in startup and services (except microsoft services), the tool bar area is pretty empty.

Still hanging up. It says Windows is shutting down, but it isn't....

    boo hoo.

Download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.
Be sure follow the instructions below carefully!• If your AV has a script blocker, please disable it
    • DoubleClick on dds.scr to run the tool

    * A command box will open, displaying added information for your reading pleasure while DDS completes its scan.
    * Upon completion, a Dialog Box should open instructing you to save and post the TWO resulting logs (DDS.txt & Attach.txt).

    • Copy&Paste both the DDS.txt and the DDS Attach.txt into your next post.
