Ok, so I click start - programs and it says New files installed or whatever, the programs installed, were actually installed 6months - 2 years ago:

Whats happened? I've done norton antivirus scan, no results as a virus or anything, and I removed spyware with Spybot.

The Messenger Error is usually caused by the incorrect date and time setting.
Be particularly certain that it is set to the right month, the right day and the right time. Ensure that the AM or PM is set correctly as well as the year. Often the time will be correct but the year will not be. Likewise, it's common for the time to be correct but the AM/PM setting is out.
[ ] Is the Time correct?
[ ] Is the Date correct?
    [ ] Is the AM/PM setting correct?
[ ] Is the Year correct?
With the New Programs suddenly also showing makes me wonder if there had been a change in dates and time, which could maybe make the computer "think" all these new programs have just been installed.
Did you do a system restore lately? Though this shouldn't change the date and time settings...plus six months back is sure way, way back.

Just saw your "date" post, that would explain it then. Have you tried resetting date and time? It is also possible that your battery is failing.

    [X] Is the Time correct?

I've done that and tested MSN, and it works, thanks a bunch JH!!!

Just curious as to why it would reset the date?
I've never actually done a system restore.

Do you HAVE daylight savings time? If so, you can set the computer to change it automatically. It is on that time setting, just check the box.
