    blue screen of death

    Hello again my knightly moderators.So anyways it has been a while since I have been in.Not a whole lot happening,except that I think my BIOS are a bit messed up or something.The blue screen appears sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row,normally after booting up and trying to check emails or surf the net.There are times that it seems to correct itself and there are times that it restarts the system and runs a system scan implying an improper shutdown.As for my systems motherboard,I have no idea what the model number of it is to check and see if there are any updates online for it.As for the rest of the system.it is running quite smoothly since our last battle with the baddies.I am attaching an fresh hjt log for inspection just for kicks.Hope all had a great Xmas holiday and New Year.

    Since i notice that many are posting their computer specs mine is as follows.
    950 AMD athlon
    40 gig HD(only using 10 of that)
    384mb pc133 sdram

    Not really being a gamer,I have no real need for any more ram than I have.About the only games installed on the system are the Mrs' gambling games,and yes I am only too well aware of the crap they can install behind the scenes.

    you might want to crack open your case and look for popped CAPS

    (you don't need to touch any-thing)

    Rather than opening the case at this point, it would help us more to know exactlly what the error message is when you receive the BSOD.
    Usually BSOD's occur because of file errors or corruption. I am not saying this can't be a hardware problem but look carefully at the error and write down what it says. The top three or four lines are usually what we need. The lower sections usually tell you "the machine must shut down...etc."

    I had cracked the case before posting to make sure all connections were secure, and found that everything is in order.As for writing down the error messages,I will do that and instruct the mrs. to do the same before hitting any keys.As for overclocking I will leave that to the gamers.Nice to hear from you again Judy.Since you mentioned nothing about the HJT log I will assume that I have been keeping on top of things well enough since our last outing.

    Hi pheonix73,
    Good to see you again too. Off-hand I don't see much in the log, few items running at start up which are unnecessary;
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MSN MESSENGER\MSNMSGR.EXE" /background
    O4 - Startup: Webshots.lnk = C:\Program Files\Webshots\Launcher.exe
    and this one;
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A
    It's a leftover from a DirectX 6.0 upgrade. It was supposed to run once and
    go away but on some systems it sticks around. You can un-check the line in
    MSCONFIG and then delete the executable file.

    But I am really wondering about that BSOD for this reason. Today I had to reformat and restore my daughter's XP computer because of constant BSOD's. I did get it to give me three of them, didn't really take long. Ended up being a Password stealing Trojan, hidden by a rootkit. Tried every which way to remove it. But finally felt the reformat was the way to go because each time I thought I killed off the nasty bugger, it came back. Plus she's had the computer for three years, never had that first bit of trouble until November. After working on it several hours she told me to go ahead and reformat, even if I thought I finally had it removed because she would never feel good about being positive it was gone. So that is what I did.
    I would like the wording on the BSOD if you can get it. I am not saying your's is the same problem she had but to be safe we really need to narrow it down.

    That's fine to leave whatever you want in start up. The third one just was not needed anymore so it was totally unnecessary
    When you get the wording of the BSOD be sure to post back with it.

    FYI:
    The text on the error screen contains the code of the error as well as its symbolic name (e.g. 0x0000001E, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) along with four error-dependent values in parentheses that are there to help with fixing the problem that occurred. Depending on the error code, it may display the address where the problem occurred, along with the driver which is loaded at that address.
    So try to get as much of this as you can. It could be something very simple...like a driver update needed or software conflicts or updates needed. Hope so anyway

    Well it's been a while since the b/s has appeared.The only thing I did over the last while that might have affected it,was deleted all my ZA logs,since they were quite old for the most part and take up a lot of space.If this was the solution to my problem,then I guess i can call that a bonus.Otherwise I will let you know if and when it happens again.Later peeps.

    Thanks for checking back with us pheonix73. It very well could have been those old Zone Alarm logs. Don't know why since I don't know the error generated but if the BSOD's are gone and so are the logs then... You know you don't really need to keep those very log and at the very most a couple. I will be honest, back when I used to use Zone Alarm I would take a look, make note of something unusual and then get rid of them. Keep us posted
