    usb device not recognized

Does anyone have any new suggestions on the common problem of "USB Device Not Recognized".

I have been surfing from forum to forum trying to find an answer to my problem.

My USB ports stopped recognizing my SD Card Reader and my Sansa Clip. Most of the time they will recognize my mouse.

I can plug the devices into other computers and they are recognized so I know it is not the units themselves. I have moved my mouse from the USB port on the back of the computer to the USB port that I usually use for the Reader and Clip (on the front of the computer) and the mouse still functions.

When I went to move the mouse back to the original USB port, I got the same error message. I quickly moved it back to the front port praying to God that I didn't lose my mouse and it still worked.

I am running a Dell Dimension 2400 Series, Windows XP SP2. I have already tried the "unplug the computer" while also removing the internal battery. No Go

I have tried deleting the USB entries in the device manager. No Go

I have tried changing settings in the Bios in the hopes that the USB ports would somehow get "reset", which I have read about.

Please Oh Please, will someone with a fresh idea lead me in the correct direction.

    Thanks!

GoTo Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management and see if XP is assigning a drive letter to any of the USB devices that is already in use by a disk drive. If so, you will not see the USB devices so just change the drive letter(s) to ones not in use.

Fairly old thread but in case you are still experiencing this issue, I will suggest you try the following freebie standalone utility called USBDeviceView from NirSoft to list all USB devices that were cached by Windows, then look for the ones showing Yes under 'Connected' column. If the device is indeed connected then skip it but if it is not and it shows Yes, then that is your problem. Try deleting it. The same goes for devices that shows No for connected, delete the matching entries so Windows creates a new ID the next time you connect the device as the entry might have become corrupt.

Download link for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps.
