Anyone else using it?

What do you think? (besides it looks like OSX)

As far as I know, nothing really secret to it.. There's a system advisor tool from microsoft, might help find potential issues that could prevent your system from running windows 7.

I think it has drivers built in for much of the recent hardware. If you have a quad core 64 bit processor, and lots of ram, you'd want to get the ultimate/64 bit version.

There's some mention of UAC issues in the beta releases that was supposed to be fixed on the retail release. Alot of the discussions about 7 went on durring the beta release, might want to search a few of the more active tech sites for complaints about hardware/software issues.

Im running windows 7 now on a dell laptop with a dual core processor and 2 gig of ram. Been using it about a week so im still in that transfer stage of getting everything installed and updated. No hardware issues out of this three year old laptop.
I did a clean install on a new harddrive so I didn't have any of the 2 day upgrade pains others have reported.

I was mostly wondering if anyone else here was using it yet and initial thoughts on microsoft's latest attempt to take over the world.

I've used someone elses computer that had 7 on it, but haven't had it on mine.. Was neat looking with the transparent windows.. I went through and turned all that stuff off, to see if it performed any better than xp32bit for 3D games.. Not much difference, but the hardware specs of their machine weren't very good for gaming, built in graphics, etc.. I didn't have the hardware or software to take advantage of it's perks, still don't have the RAM to need a 64bit OS, or photo editing apps that can use all the cores of my processor, so I haven't really considered getting it till recently.

Currently have xp64 waiting for ram and a high clocking Core 2 Duo, if there's good photo editing application support for all the cores of my qx, I'll get windows 7 and more ram. I just don't have the hair in the right place to work on that computer..

Been tooling around on my socket 939 gaming rig for about a year..

Gonna switch over to my other computer soon though... Dual 8800 gts 640MB factory OC in SLI, qx6700, 2gb pc2 9200 (hoping to upgrade to 6 or 8GB)
have 4x 30GB OCZ vertex SSD RAID 0, 2x WD caviars RAID backup...

Most of the guts are old stuff compared to what's out there now, "core i7", graphics cards etc.. but it's GOOD old stuff, that still holds it's own.. Mild overclock with the LGA775 pin mod put's the qx6700 at 1333 fsb and 3.1GHZ, watercooled too

I've been running Win7 Ult x64 for at least a month now. It's been running very smooth. I didn't have to install any drivers after install, and I haven't had any issues with it at all.

I always turn off UAC so I haven't had any issues with that. All the software I use runs smooth, the UI is nice, it doesn't lag, it doesn't glitch, I've not had one lock up caused by windows, no errors. It's been a smooth migration from XP to Win7. It was a clean install, I'm just installing what i need as I go along.

Some things I have noticed now that I got a few more of my regular programs installed.

Windows 7 seems to have a lighter memory foot print than xp.
Windows 7 took a smaller chunk of harddrive space than the OEM vista install on my wifes Dell.

I have noticed that it updates daily, I figure that will slow down eventually.

Yeah, mainly the updates I've seen are for Windows Defender, which should update daily as it's an anti-malware app...I don't trust it, nor have I installed it, but I've also seen that. It's just as streamlined, if not moreso than XP, and WAY more streamlined than Vista ever thought of being.

I have Windows 7 ultimate x86 installed on 2 machines (my old Tyan workstation and a 1 1/2 year old Sony laptop)

I started optimizing it right after the install, disabled a bunch of services that aren't needed, turned off UAC, turned off most the eye candy crap, etc.

My old Tyan likes Windows 7 and it installed almost all of the motherboard drivers natively.

Both machines needed drivers installed.

It likes to create a bunch of frivolous files (it is a Windows operating system after all...) and the hard drive is reading/writing for little while after booting to the desktop (no big deal)

Opening the task scheduler is fun. There you will find a bunch of microsneak phone home activity.

It is the RTM of what Vista was supposed to be as I consider Vista to be a public beta (a public beta that people had to pay for to use)
