Please try it again but pay more attention, not sure if it will even help but it is worth a shot.
Next step would be to try another USB port (if available). Furthermore, I'd try connecting the PC to the router/modem via an Ethernet cable (if your PC had a NIC available) just to confirm that there is a valid network connection.
After all, the problem appeared to be between your PC and the router/modem.
If your PC can connect with the RJ-45 (Ethernet) cable, then you know the problem is with the USB connection (cable or one of the jacks at either end possibly).
If you still couldn't connect with the Ethernet cable, then the problem could be with the router/modem unit. IF you already have not tried resetting the modem/router unit, I would do so at this point.
~ Router Soft Reset: Turn off Router's power (unplug power cord), wait 20-30 seconds and plug the cord back in.
(next step if the above didn't help)
~ Router Hard Reset:As power is connected to the Router (locate and press down on the reset button/switch), hold it in pressed position for 20-30 seconds or until you notice the lights on it blink once or twice. Then unplug the power cord and let go off the reset button. Unplug all connected network cable on the router. Wait about 20 seconds then plug the power back to the router. Once the router re-initilizes itself then start connecting other cables starting with the WAN line first (if you router and modem was separate).
