You may not want to use automatic updates; it can slow down normal usage of the computer if it is trying to download stuff in the background.. I usually turn off automatic updates, and then carefully select "updates" manually using the windows update website.

To turn off automatic updates, open the control panel; open "system" then select the "automatic updates" tab, then check "turn off automatic updates" click on apply, then click on OK.
