There's a temp fix suggested by "samboy" at hp user forums that involves starting the onscreen keyboard "osk.exe" then selecting numlock via the onscreen keyboard using the mouse/pointer, then turning off the onscreen keyboard. Avoid pressing the physical keyboard's numlock key after applying the onscreen keyboard numlock, as doing so will reset the odd alpha key's turning into numbers.
