xbox 360

They have ethernet plug in the back, unless you're talking about wireless adapter, then it needs to be a microsoft usb/wireless, or ethernet/wireless adapter, cause the regular usb wireless adapters need drivers n xbox probly doesn't have the ability to add drivers.
ok, so whats the difference between the Xbox 360 and Xbox live? I thought the live was the version with network capabilities so you could play life, but the 360 was an add on.

xbox live is a service; you have to buy/register for the live service in order to get the 360 online, to play games online, or download/buy content via live and microsoft points.
Some xbox 360 versions come with a free trial of the live service via their silver card and/or a handfull of microsoft points, to purchase content via the live serivce.
Most stores that sell the xbox 360 will have the live and points cards on the shelf. The live gold card lasts 12 months.
If you've never used the service/points here's a good link to read through, to find out what they offer in regards to the live service and what is available to buy with microsoft points.

so its not like the wii where all you have to do is set up the wireless network access and your online playing your games against others.

Exactly.
is the live a monthly subscription or is it a buy add on feature?

The live service is a subscription, I think silver is free; has limmited access to multiplayer online games on certain days/weekends. Gold membership allows multiplayer online games any day; costs about 50 bucks for one year membership/subscription.
here's a link to a rundown of the gold "fee based" and silver "free" versions of the live subscription.
