Nuke my OS

I hope this is an easy fix.
My kids computer is as slow as molasses, and rather than go through the hassle of trying to find the many problems it has, I want to just start over with a clean install. I have tries System Resore, but it only let's me go back about 4 weeks.
I have new XP sp3 disc and would like to erase everything from the HDD. There is nothing on this computer worth saving.
Any help would be appreciated.

How old is the comptuer? What make model, brand/model is this computer:
Does it have any expansion cards? any "additions" like videocard, soundcard, etc...

Can you get a different version of your windows disc? say windows XP SP2, the reason I ask is that windows SP3 can cuase problems on some computers and may not be compatible with different hardware drivers or applications..
