I forgot about the SFC...and I'll check the registry thing now and see if that helps.

Yeah, the registry key isn't an issue at all. It's already set to Explorer.exe.

That is what I was thinking also. LOTS of people have had problems with it.
When you looked in Event viewer look in Applications. Look at those noted in Red. Double click on one of them and you should get Event ID and Event Source. Pick the most recent and give us everything that is noted there. We know it is explorer.exe but we need to know the offending file and Event ID along with Event Source.

Good thing I know what I'm doing

    Here is the most recent:

    Event source: Application Error
    Event ID: 1000
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.5755, fault address 0x000101b3.

System File checker just finished, no errors, didn't even require the disk this time...so....I'm out of ideas guys.

Couple things to try: Try disabling and re-enabling virtual memory with a fixed page size; to ensure that something in the pagefile is not corrupted. Try logging in with a different user profile and retest for the explorer crash, to see if it's not a corrupted profile etc..

Try this, in normal mode goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup
    and click on Disable All
now reboot and without connecting to Internet, just open IE, if you dont get any error, then re-enable each application one by one and trace out the problem one.

if this doesn't solve the problem, then try this, create a new user and check if same problem is happening there, if NOT then transfer your present user to the new one.

cauzomb - it certainly wasn't the page file. I disabled it, and re-enabled it after a reboot and it's still occuring.

Judy - just wondering, how is checking IE going to check my problem? Just wondering, I'd like to get this fixed.

Honestly that made me wonder also... but found those same instructions on multiple sites, posted by different people and they all said the same thing. I suppose because it's an easy application to use but honestly I don't know.
I'm just sort of stabbing in the dark here and since that was offered at many places I thought I would do the same here...plus if it works it makes me look really smart
