    General Q on hijackthis

    Hi guys,

    I am not facing any direct threats at the moment, but am simply perplexed by the reappearing "missing file" entries in my hijackthis scans.

    Selecting the items for fixing does nothing as a future scan will have just as many of the same (I think) entries, if not more than the first time around.

    I specifically remember fixing the "missing file" entries three times over the past two weeks. I don't remember the exact number of entries each time though (always ~20 I think).

    I use Vista 64-bit, with mozilla as my main browser. I downloaded Hijackthis from download.com and here is my log... is there some sort of bug with my system?

    Thanks!

    One thing you need to do is Disable the Spybot TeaTimer. It will interfere with any fixes done with HJT.
    Disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
    * If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
    select
    Advanced Mode
    * On the left hand side, click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident icon in the list
    * Uncheck
    Resident TeaTimer
    and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer

    Now I don't see anything bad on the log. By the File Missing entries I guess that you mean all of those O23 entries. Those are services which evidently have been removed BUT the Auto Start listing in services remains, so even if you fix them the services entry for each still must be listed as Automatic, meaning when Windows starts it is going to at least attempt to Auto start all of them, even if the file is gone.
    You need to go to Services (Start>Run>services.msc)If User Account Control asks for permission, click Continue, and disable them from auto starting. Then reboot and run another HJT scan, I believe you won't see those anymore.

    Apparently HJT still has issues with 64-bit Vista. I guess Trend figured it wasn't worth the trouble to make it compatible. Not to mention that the later versions of HJT have always been imperfect with regard to enumerating the 023s correctly.....

    Ah I get it, would it be smart to re-enable tea timer after I follow through with your instructions?

    *edit* And I just had a thought, does changing the services from auto-start to manual work essentially the same as disable? I am not familiar with a lot of the entries and don't want to disable something critical :\ sorry for my hesitation

    Thanks jholland for the help, I'll get working as soon as I hear back about these new Qs.

    And if I may add a note on hjt not working well with my vista-64 laptop... a lot (80%?) of the 023 missing file entries actually work when I used "Services" to manually check (by starting service) before I change from auto-start to manual/disable. I am guessing this is not unusual?

    Note PP's comments on HJT and Vista 64bit. Yes, you could set these to manual if you prefer.

    Right.
    HJT is not reporting those accurately. I would suggest just leaving them alone unless one or more of those services is giving you problems.
