    Spyware Protect 2009

Me again. Sorry. This time it's my daughter's school laptop. She must have clicked on one of those pop-ups telling you you're infected and you need their program. So now Spyware Protect 2009 has taken over the computer. I cannot find it anywhere to uninstall, even in safe mode.

I was able to run Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool but it didn't come up with anything. I can't get MalwareBytes to load at all. HiJackThis either. I think it might have to do with the ContentProtect software that the school installed, but I'm not sure.

I was able to run ATFCleaner. System Restore was already turned off so there is nothing to go back to. I think the school must have turned that off before they sent it to us.

I really appreciate any help. I will be contacting the school tomorrow as well. We may end up having to send it back to them, but I'd rather not if I can correct the issue.

    Thanks!

I found a thread on Antivirus 2009 and it is similar to Spyware Protect 2009 so I tried some of the things suggested there. I renamed MalwareBytes and HiJackThis and got them to load. I still can't get MBAM to run, even in safe mode, but I was able to get a HJT log which I'll paste below.

I'm still unable to get MBA-M to run. I also installed Super AntiSpyware, using the same trick of renaming the installer, but it won't run either.

In the Antivirus 2009 thread you suggested running SDFix. Should I try that?

OK, I tried installing SDFix but it wouldn't install in under normal or safe mode. I can't get Malwarebytes to run, or SuperAntispyware either. I've posted the only HJT log I could get.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I feel like I'm talking to myself here.

You may need to run combofix; I'm uncertain of the process myself; but I'll point this one out to Judy to see if she can advise you on the process.

Restart in safemode "if you can" find and kill any instances of sysguard.exe, twex.exe and anything like user.ini or system.ini via task manager/PROCESSES then find and delete from the hard drive:
    C:\WINDOWS\sysguard.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\system32\twex.exe

If you get "system file/in use" error, run hijackthis; have it fix the following:

    RUNNING PROCESSES
    C:\WINDOWS\sysguard.exe

    Then try and run MBAM

Thanks, Cauzomb. I haven't tried that yet, but I did find a thread on bleepingcomputer.com that addressed the same issue I am having. They suggested renaming the .exe part of mbam.exe to something else like .bat, .com, .pif or .scr. I renamed it to mbam.bat and it was able to run. I couldn't update it, but I was able to run a scan and it got rid of a lot of stuff. I then restarted the computer, but probably should have renamed the file first. Once it restarted I renamed the file back to mbam.exe and ran the update and another scan and rebooted. Then I was able to run SUPERAntiSpyware and it found a couple more things. I am currently running an ESET online scan.

Here are the two logs from the MalWarebytes scans.
