Request for help...Laptop moving very slowly

After doing all the steps in the "Before Posting..." thread, I have noticed some improvement in my computer's performance.

However, my laptop is still moving noticeably slow, especially when running a JAVA application. Recently, the computer has locked-up severals times, especially when switching between users (XP). I have to do a hard restart to get out of it.

The greatest frustration is that of the JAVA slow down as I use many of these applications for work.

    Logs are attached.

    Thanks for the help!

Hi, thank you for posting the logs, sorry that it took so long to get to your request for help. It looks like you have more than one antivirus application installed and running at startup? MsMpEng.exe related to windows defender, and others related norton AV, both use realtime scanners, this could cause some system slowdowns, but I'm not sure how it would effect javascript, unless the applications are constantly scanning the script's for possible viruses/activx etc..

I'm not familiar with multiple user logon's with windows xp, however, all the fixes should be done via the administrator account.

I noticed that you have spybot search and destroy installed, looks like teatimer is off, as it's not showing up in the hjt log, but to be safe, ensure that teatimer is disabled in spybot search and destroy's advanced mode, under TOOLS, on the left hand side, there's "resident", ensure that "teatimer" is unchecked, prior to running any other anti-malware/anti-virus applications. Teatimer may prevent them from removing registry entries and may cause resource conflicts with other running anti-virus applications..

Your install list shows norton, and other anti-virus "online scanners" Eset, kapersky, housecall etc... It is a not so obvious general rule to only have ONE anti-virus application installed and running at a time. I'm going to recommend that you use either norton av or windows defender, but not both. There are some known issues with windows defender taking up alot of CPU resourses doing background "full scans" as well as it's realtime protection, although, I don't know enough about these applications to make a good recommendation, other than use only one or the other at a time. It's OK to use more than one AV app to cover your bases, but not more than one installed, running at a time. Also take a good look at the applications that are running in your startup entries; if you are not using them all the time, or don't need them for work, it's possible to trim down the unnecessary apps, or set the services to "manual" so that they are not starting up with windows, this way they only start when you run the application, instead of all the time in the background, taking up memory/cpu resourses..
For now, uninstall the extra anti-virus applications, including the the temporary online scanners, then post a new hijackthis log, there will be some residual entries that need to be removed.

after doing some reading, I found some recommendations to uninstall "all" but one antivirus app, again, as it's a no-no. All but ONE must be uninstalled from the add-remove programs menu in the control panel, while logged in as administrator. Some may not have an add-remove programs uninstall/remove entry, and may need to be re-installed, reboot, then un-install via the start menu program folder "application name" uninstall.. Once you get all but one uninstalled, you might have resolved the slowness.. I'm also finding a recommendation to turn off the windows defender "real-time protection" prior to trying any fixes.

After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
It appears to be the same issue that teatimer has with other applications, being that it may prevent the other applications from removing registry entries etc... You may want to leave your Norton AV application installed and remove windows defender, or removed norton and keep windows defender.. I haven't used either app, so I'll look around for a better suggestion based on what other's have mentioned regarding those two apps.

    Found some more info regarding norton and defender conflicts;

There was a time when I had Norton running with Defender, and they didn't get along well. The Norton log was full of alert/error messages after every Defender scan. Getting rid of Norton a year ago was a good decision, and I found myself nodding in agreement with what Lynx had to say in his post.

I replaced Norton with the AVG security suite, which runs happily alongside Defender. The only thing I notice is that the AVG resident shield monitors an a-squared scan very closely and slows it down quite a lot. This doesn't matter in istelf - no errors are generated - but a-squared scans noticeably quicker if I switch off the AVG resident shield temporarily.

Thanks for your time/help and don't worry about the delay. I appreciate the help you give.

I think (hope) that I have done as you asked so far.

Here is the new HJT log.

I have unloaded quite a few unused programs as well to help clear up drive space. It is (was) kind of cluttered.

    Thanks again.

defwatch.exe" is part of Norton AntiVirus from Symantec Corporation. It detects out-of-date virus definitions for Norton Anti-Virus software. Required only if you don't update the virus definitions manually on a regular basis.
rtvscan.exe is an executable of the Symantec Internet Security Suite. It is responsible for the execution of real-time virus-scanning in order to detect virus infected files
~realtime virus scanner; associated with norton/symantec software; I found numerous posts regarding this exe taking up alot of system resources and slowing computers down. If you are still using Norton antivirus, please set it to manual update; and then manually check for virus definition updates for this application when you normally perform virus scans. If you have to use real time virus protection; due to work/company policy, there's a suggestion that might be of help if this process is taking up alot of resources, all of the time, instead of durring scans and at startup; it may have a corrupted virus definition file; the suggestion is to
Version 9 and up - Those who run into a 100% utilization is having a problem with a corrupt definition file - The rtvscan gets hung on it and causes the CPU to peg. Go to the c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\symantec\[which ever version name]\7.5 - Now delete all .VXD and .WDB files and empty the I2_LDVP.VDB folder - Now do a live update and reboot - rtvscan will take very little CPU as it should
~I don't know what version of symantec/norton you are using but there are some suggestions regarding definition files via symantec's website located here To determine if your symantec/norton application is having issues, monitor it's process resource usage via windows task manager by pressing either "ctrl+alt+delete" or "ctrl+shift+escape"
click on the processes tab in task manager. If the computer is idle and your av product is not in the middle of a scan, or more than a few minutes has passed since you first started the computer up, rtvscan.exe and defwatch.exe should not be using more than a few percent of CPU. If they are using a large percent of CPU, open symantec/norton antivirus and see if it's in the middle of a scan, temporarily stop the scan and then return to task manager to monitor CPU usage, if rtvscan.exe continues to use a large percent of CPU after a few minutes has passed, you may have the problem mentioned above about the definition file. If you can't resolve this issue by clearing and updating the virus definition files; some people have suggested to stop using realtime virus protection and instead, use AVG or another antivirus application... I am not familiar with these applications, so I can't make a valid suggestion other than try to determine if you are experiencing any issues due to these applications taking up too much system resources.

Close all browser and explorer windows, then run hijackthis again and check the boxes next to the following entries, then select "fix checked"

    Thanks again for the help.

The computer does seem to be responding favorably. Its performance is noticeably faster!

rtvscan.exe and defwatch.exe were at 00% in the Processes of Task Manager.

The new HJT log is attached.

As a result of this process and your suggestions above, I have come across a potential problem with Norton...

The version of Norton that I am running now was from my/my wife's online school when we a started in 2002. It is:
    • Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition
    • Full Version w/ Program Number 7.61.935
    • Virus Definition File of: 10/12/1999 rev. 13

After looking at the site you posted about Norton, I saw that it applies to versions of 8.0 and above which got me to thinking if this version is obsolete.

Up to last week, as you saw, I was running two AV programs. I deleted the other in favor of Norton but now I see the above list of characteristics and have to ask if I am running an out-dated, unsupported version of Norton. I'll do some checking online to find this answer but if you can tell as well, that would be great.

As it is now, I believe that I have it set for manual updates and real-time protection.

Thanks again and let me know if you more needs to be done from the HJT log.

That looks good, please read this entire post before doing any of the suggestions, as it is a little mixed up; You may want to print this to use the instructions while in safemode, offline.

The next step would be to unplug your internet connection, physically, or turn off/unplug your wireless card, if you have a wireless connection. Restart the computer in safemode; log in as administrator, then turn off system restore to clear previous restore points and free up some hard drive space. This will leave more free hard-drive space for virtual memory. Once it's off, reboot the computer in normal mode, log on as administrator and re-enable system restore, then set a new restore point.. There's a program called "crap cleaner" that you can use to clean up temporary files and general clutter that may be taking up hard drive space. You can download crap cleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/

There's some website's/forums that you have to log into and may have selected "remember me"; If you frequently log into forums or other websites that require a user name and password; and you have selected "remember me" this logon info is saved via cookies; a good program to use for clearing temporary files and generally cleaning up windows registry is called "crap cleaner" or CCleaner. You can use crap cleaner to specify the things that you want to keep such as; most recent used documents, logs and cookies, start menu order, windows size and order etc.. It's a personal choice to keep them the way you want to, or restore your computer to nearly the way it was when windows was first installed. If you have custom window sizes/colors etc, you can tell crap cleaner to not fix that. In the case of deleting cookies; some are used for logging into forums, or other websites that remember your logon; you'd have crap cleaner "protect" the cookies from those website URLS, via crap cleaners left hand side control buttons. Run Crap cleaner, Select options, then find and slect the cookies tab, navigate through the list of cookies and move any URL's that you recognise as websites that you have logged into, that have the option to "remember me" or "stay logged in", over to the "cookies to keep" section, by selecting the url ~(click on the URL from the "cookies to delete" section so that it is highlighted) then click on the double arrow button that is pointing towards the "cookies to keep" section..

There are also some options in crap cleaners "settings" menu to configure how crap cleaner runs on your system. You can uncheck all the boxes in the "options ~settings" tab and uncheck all but "show prompt to backup registry issues" and "save all settings to INI file" boxes in the "options ~advanced" tab.

In the "issues" button on the left hand menu, with the blue stacked cube icon, leave everything checked except start menu ordering. The "issues" tool is a registry editor, it's up to you, if you want to pass on allowing crap cleaner to scan for and fix registry issues, you don't have to use this one..

Click on the "cleaner" tools button on the left hand menu bar, then uncheck the following options from the "cleaner settings" tree: under "internet explorer" all boxes should be checked, unless you need to keep "history" ~a list of all the websites that you vissited in the past "recently typed urls" ~all the urls that you have manually typed in the address bar of internet explorer. "last download location" ~this is the location on your drive that you last downloaded a remote file to, from an internet explorer session. "autocomplete form history" ~this one saves online passwords, or other form data, to your local disk, It's not a safe practice, I recommend remembering your passwords and turning off autocomplete. In the "windows explorer" section you can leave everything checked, unless you need to keep "recent documents" ~the list of documents that you have opened that shows up in your start menu under "documents"; "run" ~the list of commands that you may have typed into the start menu | run... comand box. You can pretty much decide what you want to keep for the rest of the "windows explorer" section. Just remember that if it's checked, it will be "cleaned" or restored to about how it was, when windows was first installed/ f it's unchecked, crap cleaner will ignore it.

In the "system" section, you can leave all the boxes checked, unless you need to keep "empty recycle bin" ~if there's a file in there that you may not want deleted, find it, move it to a folder, then empty the recycle bin manually. "clipboard" ~this is the copy and paste, or undo data that is held in temporary memory, it is lost when the system is turned off or restarted. "chkdsk file fragments" ~I recommend unchecking this, the reason is; if you have data that is lost in file fragments, there are programs that can find and recover the data. If you leave it checked, that data will be deleted by crapcleaner and become harder to recover. "windows log files" ~this box can be left checked as windows log files can accumulate over time and take up a bit of disk space ~generally you only need the most recent log files to troubleshoot recent issues.

Under the "advanced" section you can uncheck all but "user assist history" and "IIS log files" If you have used any "remote assistance" from microsoft, or your internet service provider, you may want to keep "user assist history" checked. finally, in the "applications" tab of the "cleaner" options menu, I generally recommend to leave everything checked...

Click on "analyze", when crap cleaner has completed analyzing, click on "Run cleaner"

Then if you want to have crap cleaner scan for registry issues, click on the blue stacked box icon "issues" and then click on "scan for issues" When crap cleaner has finished scanning for issues, if it gives a list of issues, with checked boxes, click on "fix selected issues" it will prompt you to make a registry backup, if you left that option checked in the above instructions. Make a backup of the registry when it gives you the promp. Save the backup in a folder and remember where it's at. Once you have saved a backup, procede by selecting the option to fix all issues.. Run the scan for issues again, if it gives more issues, fix them etc.. Do the scan for issues thing untill it comes up with no issues found.. Finally, close crap cleaner, reboot your system, ensure that your firewall/av applications are started, then reconnec to to the internet and ensure that all your applications will start up normally, to ensure that crap cleaner has not removed something important from the registry. It rarely, if ever causes issues but there is still a slight chance of encountering an issue, due to the registry changes. That being said, the registry thing is done at your own risk.

Finally, run hijack this again and post a new hijack this log here.

The version of HiJackThis is WAY, out of date, at least a couple years. You should be using the newest version which is available HERE.
Get rid of that old version entirely and then run a full system scan with the newest version and please copy/paste that log here.
You DO need to totally remove that Norton program. As noted the virus definitions are 10 years old. You should completely UNINSTALL it via Add/Remove. Then do a file search for all files named Norton, delete all you find, then do the same for Symantec and delete all you find.
As far as the online antivirus scanners, they are NOT running on the machine. Those are the activeX programs associated with those online scanners which are needed to run them. It is ok to leave them on the machine. Bear in mind, online scanners do NOT offer protection, they just scan and some of them remove, like the ESET scanner. Those really wouldn't need to be removed. The Windows Defender, as Cauz has said, really is a resource hog, and frankly I don't think it does what it claims to do. I would uninstall that also.
Then I would advise installing ONE of the good, FREE anti-virus programs. I myself use Antivir and am very pleased with it. I does update automatically but you will have to scan manually at least weekly. Also, when it updates you will generally always receive a pop-up asking you to purchase the paid program, just "X" that out.
One program showing in your HJT log which consumes SCADS of resources when it is running all the time is Skype. This doesn't need to start with Windows, and WILL cause start up to freeze on occasion, found this on my daughter's computer. Open the Skype program and there is a box which will have a check mark in it which says Start when Windows starts. Take the check mark OUT of there and reboot the computer. Skype can be run whenever you want but when you use it be sure that close the program BEFORE shutting down the computer and also when you are not using it. Also be sure that it doesn't automatically put that check mark back in there when you use it, some programs do.
Uninstall that Norton program, install the new antivirus program, stop the Skype from running and run a new HJT log and post it here.

Norton is uninstalled and remaining traces of Norton and Symantec are gone...except for a file called 'vpshell2.dll' located here: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SSC. When I try to delete, a popup warning comes up and says,
"cannot delete (filename): Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write=protected and sthat the file is not currently in use.
Skype is set to not begin at startup. I have to use this program for my online school and will try to remember to close it before shutting down. I thought this might be a resource hog.

Shall I wait to do the safe-boot and restore points?

I was working with my JAVA based gradebook last night and it was moving very slowly and locked-up once. When JAVA isn't running, the computer seems to be doing quite well.

I thought I was using the newer version, but I guess not. The HJT log (Version 2.0.2) is here...
