Shall I wait to do the safe-boot and restore points?
Yes, wait on that for a bit.
Run HJT again only this time give me an Uninstall list. To do this do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

click on the Save list... button and save the list to the desktop. Post back here with it.
I want to see what all is listed there before I have you go further. The Java may need to be uninstalled and then downloaded again but let me see the uninstall list first ok?
I also will check on that Norton file that doesn't want to "go away". Give me the list and we will see what else needs to be done.

I asked for that list to be absolutely certain one of the programs showing in your HJT log was still actually installed on the computer, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. You should uninstall this as it is no longer a current stand alone program. It is only available as part of the AVG8 anti-virus program. I would advise you uninstall it as it is probably no longer doing the job it was doing for you when you first installed it.
I would recommend that in it's place you keep the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program. No, don't have it run in the background as this is only available on the paid version and, in my opinion, that isn't necessary. Keep the free version updated, run weekly scans with it, Quick Scan is sufficient unless the Quick Scan finds something and then run the Full Scan. Also download, install, update and enable SpywareBlaster. I wouldn't run my computer without it. It blocks dialers, tracking cookies, hijackers and has a superb Restricted Sites portion. And the key thing...it doesn't run in the background. Just update, enable and close the program. Check manually for updates weekly, sometimes they have them and sometimes they don't but it does have frequent updates.
    Now for this one; C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SSC
There is NO Norton program showing in the Uninstall list but there IS an entry showing in the HJT log
O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service (navapsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe (file missing)
So run HJT again, place a check mark next to that entry and then click the Fix Checked button.
    Exit HJT.
    Now for the Java problem,
    First of allgo HERE
and download the OFFLINE install for version 6 update 11. Save it to the desktop. Don't install it yet.
Now that is the version you currently have on the computer but it is possible the download or install was bad or is somehow corrupted so downloading a new copy could make the difference.
Once you have downloaded the new copy then go to Add/Remove and Uninstall that other copy of the program.
    Reboot the computer.
Then double click that java install icon on the desktop. Follow the prompts for this install. Once it is complete then go back to that download page and on the right side click Verify Now. This will take you to the verification page where you will test to be sure the install was successful.
After this first try to go to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\ and see if that Symantec Shared is still listed. If it is see if you can delete it. If you get the same message then boot to Safe Mode and try to delete it there.
Reboot the system and then set the new System Restore point.

    AVG is uninstalled.

    Uninstalled and reinstalled JAVA.

    Spywareblaster installed and enabled.

Installed Antivir, updated and scanned. It did find a couple items which I quarantined. Report is attached if needed.

Tried to use HJT to delete the 023 record, but no good.

Tried to delete the vpshell2.dll in full and safe mode, but no good.

    HJT log is here:

You probably should also try running the Norton Removal Tool to be certain everything that can be removed IS removed.

A couple of things here, first of all you have Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service running, unless you have purchased the program this is totally useless.
    Also you need to run HJT again and place a check mark next to the following entry;
O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service (navapsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe (file missing)
When you have placed that check mark then click the Fix Checked button and then exit HJT.
This is just a left over from the Norton program that remains in the Services. You don't need that and as you can see the file is missing because you have removed it. This will also remove it from Services.

Ran the Norton Removal tool. It seemed to do some work at removing items. The vpshell2.dll is still there however.

Should I uninstall Ad-Aware completely? I use the free version.

The 023 entry for Norton is now gone. I had used the "fix checked" button a couple of times and it remained. Now it is gone.

    New HJT log here:

The AdAware is really up to you. It is not as good as it used to be, at least I don't think so anyway. If you want to keep it that is fine too. It just doesn't need to have that service running as it does nothing. You can go to Start, control panel, Administrative Tools, Services and find it there. Double click on the entry, stop the service and then change start up type to disabled.
Is the computer running any faster?

  8. #18
    Disabled the Ad-Aware service.

Yes, the computer is moving much better!!! The JAVA application (my online grade book) is also much improved. Thank you very much for your help.

I'll go ahead and set a new restore point.

Side note....I have also noticed the fan on the laptop does not run quite as much.

Is that vpsheel2.dll something I should pursue or just leave it?

Going forward, I'll run AntiVir, Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Spybot (each on regular, manual scans). I'll use CCleaner as well.

Thanks again for your help. You, and the others on this forum, provide a great service.

You can try the Norton Removal Tool to see if it will remove it. Otherwise don't worry about it.

To get rid of that dll, involves re-installing your Norton application, starting it up, then disabling all of the app features like real time/system protections, run at startup, automatically check for updates, scan on drive insertion etc.. via the applications "options" or "configuration" for each of it's little feature sets... once you get the application so that it's just "installed on the drive" and not running, at startup, or any time, unless you run the .exe
Then you have to reboot the computer, open up the startmenu, control panel, or settings/control panel? then administrator tools, then "services" find any DLL or "service" related to your antivirus/antimalware application, then set the service to "disabled" then click stop... You may have to restart windows and go into safemode for the service to actually stop. Then you have to open task manager and ensure that there are no instances of that file, or any other of your antivirus's file's runing in processes or applications... Once you have verified that, then you run the removal tool..... It's a real pain..
