There was a time when I had Norton running with Defender, and they didn't get along well. The Norton log was full of alert/error messages after every Defender scan. Getting rid of Norton a year ago was a good decision, and I found myself nodding in agreement with what Lynx had to say in his post.
I replaced Norton with the AVG security suite, which runs happily alongside Defender. The only thing I notice is that the AVG resident shield monitors an a-squared scan very closely and slows it down quite a lot. This doesn't matter in istelf - no errors are generated - but a-squared scans noticeably quicker if I switch off the AVG resident shield temporarily.
