Thread: Windows Update error 0x80248011

    Question Windows Update error 0x80248011

I run Windows XP and I am unable to Update Windows, I consistently get Error Number 0x80248011.

I have emptied the Temporary Internet files and Offline Content, deleted Cookies and History. Stopped Automatic Update Service but as suggested on the MS Update site I could not change the name of SoftwareDistribution folder, it says Access Denied. I unchecked Read-Only under Properties and it still would not allow access to change the name of this file.

I also ran Registry Mechanic and CCleaner.

Anyone know how to fix this problem? The Windows Updates are way out of date.

    Thanks in advance.

I found this on the MS site and it got rid of the 0x80248011 but now I get Error Number 0x80072EE2 instead.

    0x80248011 error code:

To resolve this error, recreate the database that stores Windows Update information or Microsoft Update information on your computer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: net stop wuauserv
    3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: cd /d c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Where c:\Windows is the folder where Windows is installed.
    4. At the command prompt, type the following command including the quotes, and then press ENTER: rd /S /Q DataStore
    5. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: net start wuauserv.
    6. Exit the command prompt window.

It turns out 0x80072EE2 is an Internet Time Out error:

    0x80072EE2 -2147012894 ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT

Suggested fix is to turn off non-MSWindows Firewalls...I use AVG.

I turned off AVG and retried and Update is now working.

The fix I posted above for Error 0x80248011 is a good fix.

Thanks for posting the resolution, glad that you got it sorted out. Be sure to turn that firewall back on! If you want to take it a step further, contact AVG regarding the windows update issues you were having while using their software.
