    Ping David Lipman

I'd like to send you an email about what follows. I have some questions.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: KIXTART
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5
    Date: 12/08/2008
    Time: 21:12
    User: N/A
    Computer: RHONDALEAFRIES
    Description:
The description for Event ID ( 5 ) in Source ( KIXTART ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following information
is part of the event: Fatal exception occurred.
    Error : (0xc0000005/-1073741819).

Okay, Butts seems to be off doing something else, and it's always
possible that someone besides David will have an answer or suggestion.

David, I ran Mult-AV yesterday, and in the middle of updating one of the
databases (#2 on the menu, right after Sophos--I don't know which one,
and I don't want to load the program to find out), the program quit. You
can see the error message below.

There are no other error messages in the Event Viewer at the time it
occurred (or before), either in System or Applications, but it
apparently did something to my user profile, because all of the
    following are gone:

    Favorites
    "All Programs"
All shortcuts - there isn't a single .lnk file left on my computer
Everything on my desktop, except the folders themselves

The reason I noticed right away was because my Quick Start Menu simply
    evaporated.

In addition, I was forced to do a repair on Microsoft Office 2003 (and I
may have to reinstall it because it's behaving strangely). I tried to
repair Quicken 2008, but in the end it required an uninstall/reinstall.
My Logitech Webcam reinstalled itself without my intervention, but based
on what's in the Event Viewer, it tried and failed several times.
Outlook Express is fine, as is IE7 (except for the missing Favorites)
and Firefox (except for missing bookmarks).

There's so much stuff apparently gone (Agent Ransack is running fine,
and it couldn't find what I was looking for anywhere) that it appears
I'm going to have to reinstall the operating system and all my programs.
Oh yeah...everything in the Accessories menu went away too, as well as
    Administrative tools.

I have System Restore turned off, but ERUNT didn't fix it, even though I
have registry backups going back a couple of years, and I tried several
    of them.

My question to you is not "how do I fix this?" because I don't think it
can be fixed except with a reinstall. What I'd like to know, though, is
if you have any idea why it might've happened.

    Rhonda:

    You can email me.

#2 on the menu is Trend Micro.

If you had the System Resore cache, that should have corrected this.

Thanks, David, but now that I've posted it, there's not a whole lot of
point. At first, I didn't want to post it in detail, because stuff like
this always seems to get Buttbrain's panties in a knot, but he hasn't
been around, so I figured it was safe.

    > #2 on the menu is Trend Micro.

That's what I told my husband, but I wasn't really sure.

    > If you had the System Resore cache, that should have corrected this.

That's one of the things I'm curious about. What would System Restore
have done that ERUNT cannot do? I really don't like System Restore. The
couple of times I've ever needed it (not desperately, but it would've
been convenient), it was a total failure, so I've just relied on ERUNT,
and up until now, it has never failed me.

It's just the weirdest damn thing I've ever seen. My computer is
actually functional as to most of what I use it for, but I can see where
stuff is missing, so I know I need to bite the bullet. I've been talking
about reinstalling XP for months--it needs it--but I'm lazy, and now I
have no choice. I do have an Acronis image, but it's a month old,
although it matters not since I either didn't lose or can reconstruct
anything important after I do the reinstall--all my data is fine.
Well...almost all...except some recent recipes in my Favorites that I
never added to my Google bookmarks.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? It's just the damndest thing.

Yes, one other person from Australia within 24hrs of your report. He was using Multi-AV
v5.00. He upgraded to to v6.00 and it happened again.

He did a restore and all was back.

    Subsequently, it hasn't be reproduced.

I'm using an older version than that. I just looked in the folder.
Kixtart is there, but the folders for the four av vendors are all empty.

I really don't want to turn on System Restore, but maybe after I
    reinstall, I will.

    That's just weird.
