    Hitachi Down!!!

i got a hitachi 80Gb HD with SUPER important data that cannot be lost (but isn't quite worth 4k$ from drive savers)

when it powers up i hear it do it's typical clicking and then it parks itself...

    *repeat

    *repeat

    and so on....

so if i manage to track down the same size/model can i X-fer controller boards and get my data off?

yes you can change the circuit boards if they are the same parts, no telling if this will work or not, I've done it before, even had a drive that needed help with the read heads, they were loose or something, holding my finger on the read heads dampened the slop/shock long enough to get my data off the drive. Check your cable connections before doing surgery though.

Have you tried Spinrite? Not sure if it would help, but at this point anything short of opening the drive up would be preferred.
