for small programs no there isn't going to be a differance(my PDA 400MHZ plays DIVX =-O )
but as far high end...
laptop as at most 2/3's what a desktop is.....
and those models will weigh in at 10+LBS

If you have a laptop like mine you don't care about your desktop anymore.. If you have a problem with your laptop #1 celerons SUCK and #2 7200RPM hard drive is the only way to go.
Dell Inspiron E1705:
Core duo 1.8Ghz
60Gb 7200RPM hard drive
8x NEC DVD burner
2Gb RAM
17" LCD
7.5lbs
the E1505 can be the same specs only 15" and under 2 lbs less weight... also there's the 1405 which is even lighter yet same specs.
Desktop: Dell Dimension 5150
3Ghz P4 (can put core 2 in)
15k RPM SCSI Cheetah HD
320Gb Seagate
1.5Gb RAM
20.1" LCD
$500 for dimesion + monitor = why build?
I'm waiting a few months for the new chipset and 800Mhz FSB chips to come out then I buy a new laptop and upgrade to core 2... Don't have a need to upgrade the desktop until core 2's are dirt cheap or I find somebody selling a sweet core duo real cheap.
At one point, I said I would never buy another OEM computer. but as blank points out, $500 for computer and monitor, its not worth the trouble of even installing an operating system.
Unless your building a dedicated gaming machine, is there really a reason to build anymore?
back from hiatus.
I agree, there is no $$ left to be made from building PCs unless you are building a high-end custom PC with possible internal and external case modifications, paint, etc.
If the specs of the PC you want to build equals to a system available for $800 or less from one of the vendors, it really is not worth the hassle imo.
Up untill 2000, one could make some if not good $$ from building a rig with average specs. In the last 5-6 years it became pointless. PC shops that are trying to make it by selling PCs and parts generally do not last long for that reason. Repairs and consultation is where the $$ is IF you have the growing client base.
its become almost pointless to even work on them anymore.

okay just did the math....
we make from 85-105 $ per machine in profit (factoring in the 2hours pay it talks to assemble and install the O/S and updates)
now that's ONLY for base models if you do any upgrade we make more...
it IS worth it to build em when you get parts at vendor cost...
considering the risks and liability in dealing with customers it's NOT worth it unless you are registerd with your state "legal", have liability insurance, have your Tax "ein"? and get parts at reseller cost... otherwise, you are setting yourself up for a HUGE pitfal in court and with the tax man. 75-150 an hour is not bad if all you do is service and onsite help and can book about 5 hours a day.
