Why does Avast still phone home when autoupdates are disabled?

I don't have Avast running resident and disabled autoupdates too but noticed
something connecting out in my internet tray icon so ran Cports to see what
it was and it was Avast. I know it has an update service I need to leave
enabled to be able to get any updates but it shouldn't be connecting to
their server still if it is not running resident and autoupdates are
disabled. Anyone know why it is doing that?

OK, was hoping I could find out without having to register on yet another
    bleeding forum.

Why do you make the assumption it is because I am paranoid? I am simply
curious to know why is all.
