What is a 'tested object', is it a file?

My AGV reports a large number of 'tested objects' when I do
a scan. I'm not sure what that means.

For instance, it regularly reported testing some 950,000
objects. But when I updated the signature files the other
day and then ran a new scan, it reported some 1,071,000
objects, an increase of some 120,000 additional objects.

I used to think that they were testing files, but I didn't
add any files between the scan of 950k objects and 1,071k
objects, so an object must be semething much smaller that a
    file.

Anybody know what an object is, in this context?

    Thanks

If you surf the web a bit, and don't delete the temporary files that
leaves behind, anything is possible. For this I use ATF-cleaner, both on
XP and Vista. Simple, rapid, and thorough enough for me. Perhaps
CCleaner is better, but I always run afoul of excessive cleaning, and am
too lazy to learn the interface better.
