    CD driver [service] disabled

    Both CD's (internal and USB connected) stopped working on my notebook (Compaq 2178 - running XP). They both show up as non-working on the Device Manager, with the message "A driver[service] for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. [Code 32]"

    I try to keep this machine running lean, so it's possible that I disconnected something I should not have. I would just reformat and reinstall Windows, but that requires the use of a CD drive. Is there a service I should specifically enable? Or something else? Thanks.

    I would doubt very much that it would require a reformat. The message likely means that the Start type for this driver is set to Disabled in the registry.
    Have you recently removed something like EZCD Creator or another CD writing program?
    Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

    I did disable some Roxio programs in Autoruns, and have several times uninstalled and tried to reinstall the drives.

    No, don't uninstall the DRIVES I said to uninstall the drivers.

    Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

    Just now, I re-enabled all the Roxio entries, uninstalled the CD's, and restarted - no change.

    K. I uninstalled the drivers by going to Device manager, and on each of the drives, clicking "Properties," then going to the "drivers" tab, where I clicked the "uninstall" button, which has a notation that says "To uninstall the driver." After both times, a question came up twice asking whether I wanted to restart, to which I answered "no." I then asked for a scan for hardware changes. The drives were gone from the list at that point, and did not reappear after the scan. I have not yet restarted the computer this time, but previously, aftr such operations, the drives reappeared on the device list, noting that they were disabled.

    Then this most likely means you probably have corrupted registry entries dealing with the drives.
    If you are comfortable with editing the registry then you can try this;
    Do the manual instructions found on the page below;

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

    Pay very close attention to each and every instruction. One of which says you must UNINSTALL all CD or DVD writing or recording programs. This just not mean disable, but actually UNINSTALL using Add/Remove. I tell you this for the reason stated on the link above;
    Deleting the corrupted registry entries might cause problems with any other CD or DVD writing or recording programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstalling these programs before you start will help you avoid any problems that removing the registry entries might cause. You can reinstall these programs after the problem is resolved.
