I've tried it, but I really didn't notice much difference. Maybe a bigger usb drive would have helped I tried it on a 1GB drive in a system with 2GB of memory. (My Laptop). As soon as I put the thumb drive in it popped up with a dialog box asking if I wanted to boost system performance. I chose yes then If I remember correctly it asked how much of the drive I wanted to use. I chose to use the whole drive since it was brand new and empty anyway.

You know at this point I would just want to ask, what is the point of all the Vista posts? It will not even be widely available until Jan. 30th. I would guess that 95% of the people with computers don't have it yet. Isn't it more prudent to wait until it is widely available to see what develops before "tinkering"?

usually I would agree with waiting for it to go mainstream but if nobody tinkers with it early on, who's to know what to make better on it before roll out.

My concern lies with people with little or no computer knowledge. Recall all the folks who updated to XP but didn't have computers which met the minor requirements, heck we still see a few of those from time to time.

When these " WOW improvements" are posted like this I believe it gives folks the false impression that millions of people are running this new os when that is just not the case.

I just think these Vista Posts are coming too soon. It will not be widely released until January 30, 2007...at the earliest and until a lot of very common folk are using it, well, we just don't know.

I must say I wholeheartedly agree with ~TL's comments in the link I just noted above.

Quite frankly I think these Vista posts are very likely "sales ploys" by this poster since he "claims" he can get discounts for people who are members here, which I think really is a bit tacky. But that is just my opinion, others will have to decide for themselves.

do you guys acctally have RC1/RC2 or RTM?

out of all the Windows O/S i think it's going to be the most mature at launch.

and there are about 75k+ full versions of ultimate floating around (intel retail edge)(how i got my copy)

and as far as early posts....

im trying to stay ahead of the game (as a computer tech i need to know the software before public launch)

I've used windows vista off and on for about a year now, most recently RC1. in any case, I don't think Vista will be any better than XP at launch. That is to say we will likely see SP1 within a few months and SP2 after that. What needs to be pointed out here is that there are several different levels of Vista and most computers made within the last 2 yrs can run vista, just not aero glass which is the eye candy. It will be a similar situation to win2k vs. winXP. They are both pretty similar under the hood, but WinXP has more decoration. This is kind of the same situation people will be presented with when they move to Vista. I've actually run it on my old Dell I9200 laptop with a 1.6Ghz Pentium M and Mobile Radeon9700, so there are a lot of systems that can actually run Vista, just not to it's full gui capabilities.

In the end though, I nuked RC1 in favor of WinXP Pro's more robust driver support. The Vista drivers just aren't all there yet and they won't be for several months after it is released to the public.

What's wrong with discussing it? People learn by reading and if we are dumbing the forum down to the least common denominator, we have fallen quite a long ways from the old days were the bleeding edge was why people came here. Guess things change.

If you run Vista x64 on a SMP Dual-Core Opteron system with 4 GB of memory, it's snappy too.....

    acruxksa-

i know that most of vista's requirements are for the apperance but that's what people want now - bubbly gui's (tho i still think DOS owned [ only true computer guys knew what they where doing {no nerdy kids who thought they newcomputer}])

    and i've put vista on a athlon 2500 with 512 and a MX440
when you turn off the visuals it's quite quick

and IMO if your running less then that you shouldn't drop 200+ on an O/S but a new computer

and i rember the days when INAG was for the bleeding edge..

used to be like 10 new articles a day... now it's like 1 a week

    F1-

    it's greesed lighting on a P4 3GHZ with 1gb ram and a ti4200 (the comp i use at work)

but when your do'in ray trace renders it'll tap out ANY computer

while with the ready boost i was able to play my game with out lag!!!!

(ray trace renders=800x600 animated water with shadows and light refraction)
*it's about the hardest you can work a computer
**i run direct 3d for my veiwports too

    im impressed

    my only complaint....

there arn't any solid state drives avalible

i know samsung made a proto. but it's not on the market yet

If you are referring to the new feature of Windows being able to utilize USB Flash Disk as virtual memory, that in theory, sounds worst than using the HD since it is slower even on a USB 2 connection.

The whole problem is Windows not utilizing the entire RAM before moving on to using the page file (virtual memory) which imo, is a god awful configuration...
Forcing the OS to make use of all available RAM, given that you have plenty installed, before initiating page file makes more sense than using different external drives to create a half-@$$, tirivial system performance boost!

I have not yet obtain the experience myself but from what I heard of two techie friends, there was no significant perf gain ito...sounds like another 'Hyper-Threading' hype to me.
