    Switching HDD

Alright, this is where this is going.

I've currently go a 160GB WD IDE HDD that I use in my computer. I just got my 250GB WD SATA Drive. I normally use DriveImageXML to make a backup and transfer it to the new drive and it works flawlessly, well, this time it doesn't want to cooperate. I can get the backup to work, and I can get the transfer to go. Man is that SATA drive faster. But, my computer will boot, but it will not go past the BLUE Windows XP splash (you know the one that says "Windows is starting...", right before it brings up the user logon).

I have formatted 3 times and retransferred 3 times. I don't know if I am going to have to just load a new copy of windows on there....which I really don't want to do, as this install is still perfect, and I finally have it all tweaked to run really efficient.

So, my question is, is there something extra on a SATA drive that doesn't get loaded onto an IDE drive to make it work? Or am I just stuck with reloading windows? And if that's the case, does anybody know how well the windows File and Settings transfer application works?

    TIA

    Michael

EDIT:: Scratch the file and settings transfer wizard....it won't transfer programs....

are you try'in to boot off the SATA drive?!

if so you might need to install XP us'in a DRIVER disk

or if it's a native Sata drive you might be able to configure your SATA as IDE

Ummm....not sure exactly what you are trying to say....I don't need to install any drivers, the disk works fine. I can write/read, format, and access the drive just as I can an IDE. I am trying to eliminate the IDE drive and move everything to the SATA as its much faster.

See, that's what DriveimageXML is, except it's free. I've never had any problems before, but now I can't get it to take to save my life. I can get the image transferred and I can see all the files on the SATA drive, but it just won't load to the logon screen....I have downloaded WD's HDD Tools and I am going to try to use that and see if it goes any better....

Any other ideas are still welcome.

Could this image be bad? If so it won't feasible to correct the issue.
If you used that utility before, then I reckon you know what you are doing and how the program works. What seems to be different than previous times?

Come to think of it, you created the image from an IDE drive and now trying to load it to a SATA drive, wouldn't that be a problem considering the differences?

The image is good....I even reimaged the original drive with it with no issues.

The only thing that's different this time is that I'm going from IDE to SATA instead of IDE to IDE

Just as I thought, the mobo/chipset drives would be completely different hence the boot problems.

So, if applicable, I'd suggest you uninstall the mobo/IDE drives first, then take the image....basically get rid of what is not applicable/valid on the target drive.
