    Problem Downloading MS Money 2007

I have repeatedly tried to download Microsoft Money 2007. The error message after downloading the file seems to occur when the Money program is launched. "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall."

Searching Google with that phrase suggests a virus is present.

    1. I ran "chkdsk" for drive C: (only hard drive) which came back fine.
    2. I reviewed all programs and saw nothing unusual.
    3. I ran the MS Malicious s/w removal tool, with nothing found.
    4. I used Symantec security check and BitDefender Online scan.
    5. I disconnected from the Internet, booted into safe mode, ran the latest CCleaner, SpyBot, Adaware, and MS Defender. I then rebooted into Normal mode.
    6. I tried downloading the Money program again, and got the same message.
    7. The HijackThis log is below.

    Thank you.

    Craig

Check Add/Remove and be certain to uninstall everything related to this download.
Do a search on the computer for any of the previously downloaded files and remove them.
Are you choosing to download and run or download and Save? Whichever you are doing, try the opposite. Also, just for the download disable all your McAfee stuff...anti-virus, anti-phishing, etc. Also turn off that Spybot TeaTimer too. See if that helps.

    Hi.
I made sure everything was uninstalled and deleted. I emptied the trash can file. I turned off the various anti-virus, etc programs and disabled the SpyBot "immunization" programs. I tried a combination of download and run and download-save-run. I even copied the extracted file to a different location.
    No luck.

Craig, did you use the removal/reinstall directions given here?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895866

It could very well be there is a problem with their downloads too. You might wait a day or two and try again.

Good morning. First, thanks for your ideas. I appreciate them.

With respect to remove/reinstall -- I did search MS using the error term "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus" and found nothing.

The sequence of my problem: the download, using a Digital River program to download the "packed" file, works fine. It is when I try to open that file that I immediately receive that message. So I can't see how removing my current version of Money would help.

I continued my Google search and found that this issue is associated with Cool Web Search. I used the CW cleaner and it reported I was "clean" with respect to that program.

I did find this interesting post on PassMark Forums.

    http://www.passmark.com/forum/showthread.php?t=549

They attibute this problem to a Computer Associates application.

"CA are now saying that this can be fixed with a registry entry change. It isn't clear if they are going to fix this properly or not now.

Anyway here is what they are suggesting.
    1. Go to registries: HKLM\Software\ComputerAssociates\ITMRT
    2. Go to HookExclude subKey.
    3. Add bit.exe to the list
    4. Reboot"

I did indeed find this in my registry but did not do anything.

I don't know why I have a CA product, but maybe it was a part of some other application. I don't know.

    Does this prompt any ideas?

    Thanks again.

Do a search on the computer for Computer Associates and see what turns up. CA is a reputable company offering all kinds of programs, anti-virus, internet security programs, firewalls, etc.

I found a couple of more posts blaming my problem on CA's new software product which seems to be imbedded in McAfee virus and anti-spying products.

I uninstalled all of these on my PC and it did solve my problem. Just "disabling" these programs was insufficient.

Maybe someone can figure out an easier way to overcome this CA shortcoming.

    Thanks again for your help.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I was not saying the problem was NOT with CA, I was only noting that in case there was something you had installed that was from CA you were not aware of or had forgotten about. I am glad you got the problem solved. Good investigating!

If enough people contact CA maybe they will. I would contact them if I were you and tell them what you have found and that disabling was not enough. It is absolutely up to them to correct the shortcomings or problems with their programs.
