    Windows Explorer Locking Up

Just recently I have started to have real problems wirh WE.
I locks up (Not Responding) whenever I try to access a folder, and searching on it is almost impossible - it starts and then locks the whole machine so I have to re-boot.
    I run XP-Home. I have 1GB RAM, my main drive is 75% full (a 75GB drive).
It maybe my Windows cache is too small but I am not technical enought to find out the information to know what it is, what the optimum size is or indeed how to change it.

    Anybody Help ...

    Regards .. Dave

    Just a thought ...
Is there a maximum number of directories/sub-directories or files in total or files within a directory/sub directory that XP allows.
Also I have done all the normal checks - spyware/malware/virus and a defrag of the C drive.
The system is a Medion 256 with Intel 4 processor 320GHz
