Have you looked at the Event Viewer logs? There should be something in there?

Also, If you have a AV scanner or Firewall type program, I would try disabling, shutting them down and trying again.

I didn't look in event viewer, but this was on a fresh install. Only things installed OTHER than basic windows was my LAN driver.

I did get things working after I installed SP3. So far everything is installing well and all is going good.

Strange, if you want to do further testing, to see if it's a common issue, I can try installing on a "FRESH" new drive, on a different machine from a different IP address. Your first post, you re-installed and then went to autoupdate.. <My game machine is pretty much empty.. Just a few games, and some auto-configuration stuff that I have turned off; never been online, never auto-updated windows, I could try doing an auto-update on it to see what happens, see what part of the drive changes compared to my backup image.

It is strange indeed, I can't believe there is nothing in the Event Viewer, what else is it supposed to be logging???
My gaming machine used to be the same way, nothing was ever updated. My XP came with sp1 and that was good enough for me without any issues.
Well, that was fine until some of the newer games I bought required minimum sp2 to be installed, I was like "wtf?!?!". Why does a game require a specific sp? Probably compatibility issues since they probably tested it on sp2 systems, but this is kind of a new thing to me.
I lost track of time and real-life sense since I got the STALKER Clear Sky game. Main reason why I haven't been able to do anything online.
