The amount of deforestation in Oregon is pretty nasty. Our relatives have property next to one of the rivers there and after the loggers were finished with the side of the hill on the far bank, a storm or two later, the swimming holes and gravel beds got plugged up with silt from run-off coming off the bare hillside that used to be pretty dense with 2nd gen tree's. It takes about 20-30 years of light gentle climate for the trees to take back the hill, but with storm after storm that they've been getting, the hills keep sliding and loosing top soil, so nothing get's a chance to take hold for long...
