I loaded it and immediately had to remove googleupdate.exe from

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

As well as a scheduled task that they add for googleupdate.exe. I
haven't done much sniffing on the traffic it sends yet, but I will
probably be doing that when I get a few extra minutes. You can bet
they aren't providing Chrome out of concern for your privacy, or your
    security it would seem.

"Google did not directly address questions about this vulnerability or
whether it plans to make any changes to Chrome to prevent any
potential problems. Instead, a Google spokeswoman said in a statement
that, by default, Chrome downloads files into a separate folder
instead of on the user's desktop as a way to avoid some security
problems. In addition, she said that users can set the browser to ask
where to save each file before downloading it. [WTF? Like that helps]

She also did not say whether Google intends to upgrade to the more
recent version of WebKit, which addresses the problem by displaying a
dialog box for JAR files asking users if they want to"

You could've just removed it using Add and Remove Programs.

I didn't want to remove it, I only want it to run when I initiate it.

actually, googleupdate.exe and the scheduled task remain even after you
uninstall google chrome through add and remove programs...

But as you may have figured when you read the subsequent posts, I was
talking about removing Google Update (which can be removed using Add and
    Remove Programs).

well i guess the problem i had was that the subsequent posts didn't
match my experience... there was no google update in my add and remove
    programs...
