    Disable Avast At Startup..

    Installed the latest Avast 4.8 Home and I can't stop it from loading
    when I start Windows XP.

    I tried turning off the services associated with Avast but Avast is
    protecting those services.

    I ran MSconfig and turned it off but it turns itself back on when I reboot.

    What I need is a simple on-demand anti-virus scanner and it appears
    Avast is no longer letting me set it up that way.

    Help!

    Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
    http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe

    http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

    English:
    http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...irus-for-free/

    To use this utility, perform the following...
    Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
    Choose; Unzip
    Choose; Close

    Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
    { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

    NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
    FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

    C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
    This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
    This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
    The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

    You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
    download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
    needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
    during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
    Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

    When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
    file.

    I'm in the middle of setting up a new XP computer so I'm going to have
    to pass on the multi_av.exe at this time. I will add the urls to my
    notes so I can take at look at it later.

    I can live with Avast for the time being.

    Spam -- no f'n way.

    The Multi AV Scanning Tool is a front-end to four "On Demand" anti virus scanners which
    refelects that desire.

    In addition, it can be used concurrently with Avast.

    Once I get the new computer all set up the way I like it, I'll take a
    look at your Multi AV Scanning Tool. I didn't see your reply as SPAM.

    Go to settings, click on troubleshooting and check the 'Disable Avast
    self-defense module' box, it's there to stop malicious programs from
    disabling Avast.

    Actually, I think I tried that and it still wouldn't let me stop Avast
    from loading at startup but after a day I've gotten used to Avast
    running in the background. It's not as intrusive as I thought it would be.

    Thanks for the information though, I will put it in my notes in case I
    want to disable Avast later.
