    Do you have buttons on the monitor to adjust the size and shape of the picture? That is where you should try to remove that, by using those monitor adjustment buttons. You shouldn't have to change any actual display settings I don't believe. Try those buttons first.

    That was it! It was a setting within a setting within a setting within a setting but after a bit of fiddling, I found it. I don't know HOW exactly my family managed to mess with that but I was able to find the buttons to change it back.

    That can happen when the "refresh" rate is changed in the display properties, the monitor stores it's width and heigth settings for the current resolution/color depth/refresh rate that it detects from the computer. If the refresh rate or resolution changes, the displayed area might change as it is detected by the monitor.. It can also happen if the monitor gets reset to factory defaults from the on screen menu.
