    Ad-aware SE should work just fine with your opperating system, since it is an on demand scanner, where you have to tell it to search for bad things, it shouldn't need to run in the background at all. If it does start with windows, even though you tell it not to start with windows, you will need to open the control panel/administrator tools/ services, and set the ad aware service to manual, click apply etc...

    OOPS, overlooked your post about being denied access to administrative tools..
    Ensure that you are logged in as administrator, better yet restart in safe mode, then log in as administrator, then do the administrator tools/services thing..

    how to boot into safe mode

    If you have processes/applications running in the background all the time you can stop them via the services manager and set them to disabled, or manual, depending on the software needs, or configure the application to not boot itself, or it's features at startup, "if you don't need them" you'd do this in order to conserve resources.

    You will still have the same amount of system ram as before, however stopping some of the applications/services should free up those resources, for your other applications to use.

    Keep in mind that many of the things you see in task manager, such as scvhost.exe are required for windows to opperate properly. I don't want to get into this tuning/performance tip's stuff as there are TONS of guides online dealing with just this kind of thing... It would be like.... pissing in the wind..

    Windows uses lots of ram, there are some performance and tuning tips for windows 2000 on several other websites regarding configuring the desktop properties, task bar, windows apearance, classic mode desktop/startbar etc... Al in efforts to conserve base resources and get windows moving a little faster..

    Thumbs up

    i don't think i will do anything else for now. it seems that we took care of my initial problem.i am not a pc whiz. there is no use in me tweeking this thing. i would most likely tweak the wrong way. i will put up with its quirkeyness. until i have enough green stamps to get a NEWER,BIGGER,BETTER one. thank you very much for the help,
    if you ever need anything from me just holler.you might be ankle dip in water,one day, i'll walk you thru it. {edit by admin, email address removed to prevent spammers from grabbing it}

    You're welcome, I'll keep your address for a rainy day Thank you for taking the time to do the steps to see what was going on.

    If you want to tweak the startup/background services/apps, to speed it up, reduce base resources used etc.. Feel free to post another thread asking for help in tuning/speeding up windows 2000.

    Be sure to repost similar information that was asked for in this thread, PC make model, drive space free/used, operating system installed, applications etc.. It will help in determining a good starting point, that way myself, or another volunteer can quickly look up what you can do.

    There's a few things regarding security, a few things regarding performance and resources. It's not difficult to tune it, keep in mind that it's easier to deal with one thing at a time, that way you can check what happens, if there's any problems, it's easier to put it back the way it was when you only have one thing to reset.

    If not much has changed from this thread, you can copy paste the details from here, along with another hijack this log, or other program log that we can use to decide what to adjust/keep/remove etc..
