Hi, most of the stuff that gets loaded into memory, as you use them, may stay there "cached" like you said, staying warmed up. It's OK if they don't change in size. It's pretty common for programs to not unload some files from ram when they are closed, but it can be troublesome IF they fill up memory.

I'll look into what kind of memory upgrade you could get for your laptop.

For now, don't worry about the files and their memory usage in task manager, until you get the low virtual memory error.

The event viewer errors can be missleading at times, and can get confusing when trying to deal with a specific issue. If you are not having issues loading windows and running your applications, doing work on your system etc.. you can pretty much ignore the event viewer.

I don't want to stray away from the virtual memory issue, until we find out WHY it happened.

According to dell, that particular laptop can only take up to 256 megabytes of memory..

I don't have a recommended source but you can check with kingston.com for KTD-INSP/128 - Part Detail Description: 128MB Module
    Mfgr's System P/N's: 311-0651 (Dell); 311-0654 (Dell); 311-0725 (Dell)
    Form Factor: Memory Module
    Pieces/Unit: 1
    Warranty: Lifetime†

price is showing up as 34 dollars each, two of them will replace your old memory modules and max out the system ram. There is also some word going around that you can put in a Pentium III celeron 6xx mhz, but it's got some issues..

I usually recommend Crucial.com but they come up with "no appropriate module for that model"

Best bet is to fix what's going on with it without buying anything and save for a new laptop, perhaps a nice macbook, or dell 15xx series. Thats what I would do, cause either of those lappy's are on my want list and for the price of the upgrades to your current system, you could probly buy a decent amount of ammo/gasoline etc..

Well, you did say that you are a redneck! I'm into shooting but I haven't for a while. Working on learning reloading, 38,357 and getting a winchester in .357 mag

So it looks like aawservice is using too much, ontop of the ashweb "avast" antivirus resource consumption, internet explorer, and windows, that's definately gonna fill up..

Are you scanning for malware with ad-aware when this happens, or is it just loaded in the background all the time?

Are you using ad-awareSE or 2007?

If you are using ad-aware 2007 or later, dump the 2007/later versions and get ad-aware SE from a well known source, then update it by downloading only the latest definitions from the authors website. Best to read through their instructions for updating. I don't think the latest versions were designed to work with older opperating systems.

If you want to keep using ad-aware to scan for stuff, but don't want it to use up memory when you are not scanning for stuff.

Turn off the aawservice from administrative controls through windows 2000 control panel.,

Open admin controls, open "services" and find the AAW thing, double click on it, select stop, then set the "STARTUP" to MANUAL, click OK then restart.

This application should now only startup the aaw service when you start ad-aware from the start menu or desktop shortcut.

Continue monitoring for any memory resize errors, if it happens again, it's still a process of elimination. You can safely change your page file to 768MB or 1024MB fixed ~"minimum size is set the same as maximum size"

    reading was maxed out over373,256K.
bingo, is that just one application, or all of them?

Just a word of warning though, if AAW is preventing something from trying to get on your machine from that website... Don't go there without some other form of protection such as anti-virus and pop-up blocker. Also, the AAWservice may continue to run in the background after exiting Ad-aware, just go into your task manager and kill the service.. There may be some code or something that can be added to the shortcut properties of Ad-aware, to kill the service after exiting, but I'm not finding one specific enough.
