I run Windows98SE and I continue to fail to manually load the latest
updates to Ad-Aware which you are very kind to give an alert to.

    I have Ad-Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1

The last definition file that works for me is :

    Reference Number : SE1R210 27.12.2007
    Internal build : 253

But I am totally unable to load and install anything later than that.

    What to do?

*Not a Thing of Beauty* but it /should/ work for you.
Good luck and let us know how you made out.

Many companies no longer support 98 SE. I speak from experience since I
had to update to XP in 2006 if I wanted to use TurboTax and Quicken.
They would not install on 98 SE.

You might want to look on the Ad Aware web page to see if you can find
out what your old version now supports but the latest free version is
"Operating Systems: Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows XP (Home and
Pro), Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Pro"

What you do is up to you. Try and find some similar program that still
runs under 98 SE or update to XP. If your computer is old you may not be
able to update the OS. You'll have to do the research on that.

Or wait and see if anyone else comes along with a solution to your problem.

Maybe post a new question in this newsgroup and see what other 98SE
    users are using?

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

(I really didn't want to update to XP but now that I'm used to it it's a
much more stable OS than my 98 SE. My opinion, your mileage may vary!)

I use the How-To method but that's not the problem.
I use the same version : Ad-Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1 and W98SE.
The problem must be somewhere in Ad-Aware.
    If I start Ad-Aware I get after 5-10 seconds the message :
Error while loading the Ad-Aware definitions file ( and an OK button ;-) ).

I didn't backuped my latest working definitions file, so I don't know
    exactly when my problems started.
My last scan with a working definition file was

    Ad-Aware SE Build 1.06r1
    Logfile Created on:zaterdag 17 mei 2008 22:50:37
Created with Ad-Aware SE Personal, free for private use.
    Using definitions file:SE1R242 28.04.2008

For me Ad-Aware refuses to load the definition files from 22-05-2008 and
    later.
Maybe already some definition files earlier, but I used Ad-Aware once a
month and I overwrite the latest def. file.
This worked for years so I didn't backup the latest working def. file. I
    know ;-).

    Chris,

You have explained my problem exactly.

I too follow the How-to instructions that Silj kindly outlined. It is
very simple to download the file, unzip it and extract the new defs file
into the correct directory. As you say, it is when you fire up Ad-Aware
afterwards that the new defs file fails to load and you get the error
    message:

Error while loading the Ad-Aware definitions file

Surely, somebody must have a solution to this problem?

It's time to put AdAware SE out to pasture for good...

The last definitions file to work with 98/ME is over two months out of
    date(SE1R247 13 May 2008).
SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot S&D are 2 well known and respected products
that still support 98 and ME...

    indeed, that's the best solution.
    I'm going to use SuperAntiSpyware.
    Thanks for the info.
