Verizon will be banning alt newsgroups

Verizon in its inestimably excellent way has shot itself in the foot again.
IMNSHO one of the benefits was the relatively slow but otherwise excellent
newsgroup service. Now they have decided to drop all alt.* newsgroups and
limit themnselves to only the big 8 plus 0.verizon.*

    comp.*
    humanities.*
    misc.*
    news.*
    rec.*
    sci.*
    soc.*
    talk.*

This is going to impact me on several newsgroups, and I'll have to find a
way around it, especially for alt.binaries.woodworking

    Hi, Han.

Did you see the thread just a couple of entries before yours? Check out
"TWC your ISP?", started by Pete the Pilot on 6/11/08.

So we now have Time Warner and Verizon pulling the plug on
alt.comp.software.financial.quicken - and many other excellent newsgroups.
    Who's next?

I use Usenet.com news service, their cheapest package as I don't do
binaries, and while their standard servers place a little spam at the
bottom of every post, you can email them for a server name to use that
doesn't. It has alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking group as well as many
    other "woodworking" groups.

Unless you're after usenet binaries, or you don't mind paying for usenet
access, many ISP's have already dropped their usenet servers. Even so, usenet
activity has been continually rising year after year. And with the rise in
usenet activity, the rise in abuses like cracked software, illegal porno,
sporge, spam, and trolls have increased along with it. But so has the
sophistication of the filtering techniques. I like the old police "radar gun"
analogy that says "for every new radar gun, there's a new radar detector."

Anybody who wants free or paid usenet access, independent of their ISP, can
certainly find it. For example, here's a free one news.motzarella.org, or try
searching newzbot.com. If all else fails, you can use the cumbersome Google
Groups. Better yet, subscribe to frequently updated group feeds of your
choice. Anyone looking for "alt.privacy.spyware" articles can find them here:

    Hi RC
There are many newsservers, free and low cost. There is a big discussion
of this Verizon decision in the private (for Verizon customers only)
    0.verizon.* hierarchy.

You purchase a seperate usenet account from a 3rdparty.

Are you going to use a free one or a paid one, Dave? The best
non-commercial server I know is news.individual.net, and it costs less
than USD$15/year. Most of the truly free servers don't have great
retention, and they miss a lot of posts.

If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will
scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will
refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something
which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he
will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is
explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

    Does this server carry binaries?
