What peeves me about the new release .....

I did a full scan, both at high and slow speeds and it detected *over*
10,000 (yes ten thousand) references to CoolWebSearch plus assorted other
nasties. Yet reported *none* of them being critical.
All of these were references in the registry.

My up to date version of SpyBot Search and Destroy plus a couple of other
scanners that I use reported nothing!!!

Any thoughts on what is going on???

    Most probably it's this issue...

"potentially dangerous" entries in my registry, specifically under
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatability
    http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/re...,backpage=,sv=

"just so you know- avg 8.0 free and pro has an incompatibility issue
with spybwareblaster and spybot search and destroy. If you see the
ie/compatablility active x registry keys, it is because these programs
use this type of scripting to stop active x in registry keys.
A lot of discussion on wilders security forums are about this and I
spoke to a representative at AVG Technologies, because i too am getting
them and i am a reseller for AVG and do not need all my clients
    panicking when they see these.
The tech told me as long as they are in the "warning" tab to just ignore
them. Some have found if you remove them to the virus vault then delete
them, wierd things start happing with Windows.
Javacool who makes spywareblaster is suppose to talk to AVG Technologies
    and figure this out."

You know, another way of looking at this is to see SpyBot and S-Blaster
as loading up the Registry. I don't like a bloated registry but it
beats getting a nasty. On the other hand, a lean machine runs much
    better.

I would rather have the bloated registry entries by spywareblaster, then the
bloated services running by avg 8.0.

    Me too.
I would be ready to get AVG 8 (preferably the free edition <grin>),
    except for 2 problems:
Number 1: I tried to install SP1 for Vista (Home Basic) on this cheap
laptop, and it barfed. I think I am fully updated, except for SP1. MS
tech assistance took control of the computer for about 5 hours in total,
and could not get it to work, despite uninstalling a whole bunch of
things, including AVG. Their advice was Avira Antivir, and so far so
    good.
Number 2: Spouse upgraded her machine to AVG 8, and hates it because it
slows things down to a crawl. Hotmail downloads take forever because of
the ad banners that need to be checked, etc.

So, no AVG 8 for me until those problems get fixed (by AVG).

Re: AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

I installed AVG Free 8.0 on a 1.8GHz Pentium M with 1GB RAM running XP
Pro, and the laptop acted as if it was running as a 500Mz PIII with
256BM RAM - SLOW. Support for Free 7.5 ends on May 31, but I
understand you may still receive updates manually. If this is the
case, I'll keep AVG Free 7.5. However, if indeed all support ends on
May 31, I'm moving all of my computers to Avast!

I've installed Avast!'s free home edition on one of my other computers
as a test bed, and I'm impressed. If anything, it has a smaller
footprint than AVG Free 7.5. Virus definition updates are not as
frequent as AVG's, but if it works and is transparent to the operation
of the computer, I'll keep it. So far, it's been excellent.

I certainly don't need an anti-virus programs that's overkill, and AVG
8.0 seems to be such a program. If an anti-virus program requires a
dual-core or Core 2 CPU and tons of RAM, I'll look for other options.
One thing is for sure, I'm not buying a new tower or laptop just to
    run AVG.
