The average user now encounters variants of spyware probably more then
viruses....

Well duh, the 'new' one is always better according to the manufacturer.

Because, quite frankly it is awful, it is slow, it is unresponsive, it
insists on scanning on a daily basis, and takes five hours to do the scan.
While the scan engine is running it sucks 100% of resources....

Try installing avg 8.0 on an older machine, you will see why. I could quite
confidently take norton 06/07/08 off a win xp machine with 256/512 mb of
memory, and replace it with avg 7.0/7.5 and see a visible and clear
improvement in speed of a system. That is no longer the case.
I will ahve to start using Avira Antivir, i am trying it out now, so far ok,
seems pretty limited though.
