Re: AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

Even when I was using the 7.5 version, after every update, I would get a
pop-up type window that told me that ver 8 was available. (but never gave a
link to the free version - someone in another group supplied a link)
    Did you not get this????
    I was driving me crackers.

Besides that I had to reboot the pertooter after *every* update.

I surrendered & downloaded the ver8 - so far so good.

Re: AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

Never got any notice from the program that a version 8 was available. I
just noted some comments about it on this newsgroup. I ran "update" on my
program and it told me all was up-to-date. I went to the company's web
site, saw it there, and downloaded it and installed it. My installed
program, 7.5. never told me about it.

I never got a popuup window after updating. I do run popup blockers but
they usually tell me that a web site tried to pop something up. If it were
the home page for AVG, I would have let it through.

I got an occasional reboot request, not when virus definitions were the
    only update.

Version 8 by the way is awful, it has a much greater footprint then avg7.5,
the scanning engine is much much slower, it is sluggish and adds
considerable time to boot up. I would no longer recommend AVG for an older
machine (less then 1gb and slower then dual core).

It scans for spyware too and not just virus now so that is probably why.

Dave and Gaz, I think I agree with you both.

I ran a full scan with AVG version 8 after already having negative scans
from Spybot, Adaware, A-squared, and using Spyware Blaster. CCleaner had
shown no registry issues (I know it's not an antispyware thing but just
threw this info in fwiw.) AVG version 8 found "no infections" and "no
spyware," but it gave 214 warnings!!! I'm pretty sure my machine is clean
and I opted to not let it clean out the warnings, all of which would have
required it to edit the registry!

Interesting. I don't know what to make of the "warnings" which say all
    those things are "potentially dangerous."

    [snip]

May be of interest to AVG 8 users...

"potentially dangerous" entries in my registry, specifically under
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatability
    http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/re...,backpage=,sv=

"just so you know- avg 8.0 free and pro has an incompatibility issue
with spybwareblaster and spybot search and destroy. If you see the
ie/compatablility active x registry keys, it is because these programs
use this type of scripting to stop active x in registry keys.
A lot of discussion on wilders security forums are about this and I
spoke to a representative at AVG Technologies, because i too am getting
them and i am a reseller for AVG and do not need all my clients
    panicking when they see these.
The tech told me as long as they are in the "warning" tab to just ignore
them. Some have found if you remove them to the virus vault then delete
them, wierd things start happing with Windows.
Javacool who makes spywareblaster is suppose to talk to AVG Technologies
    and figure this out."

    See: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1319#faq_1319

Having upgraded to the AVG Free 8.0., I recently uninstalled SpyBot S&D,
and my computer is now running much faster than before, with no hangs.

When I ran the AVG 8.0 scan, it found about 130 warnings, which got moved
to the virus vault. Better safe than sorry. But then I read the FAQ,
and realized AVG is incompatible with SpyBot, SpywareBlaster, etc., so I
got rid of them. Now my XP2 machine has only AVG Free 8.0 and the Comodo
freeware "Firewall Pro" to protect it. So far, so good.

But until we see the first anti-malware comparison reports, we won't really
know if the AVG Free 8.0 anti-spyware component is working as advertised.
The other way would be if my Internet browser got "hijacked", but I do a
lot of web browsing, and so far everything appears to be normal, knock on
    wood.

Glad I stuck with 7.5 then. I did download 8.0 but never installed it. I
use Spywareblaster and Spybot so don't need the aggor of AVG giving
    false warnings.

Same here but it detected over 10,000 "warnings" on my pc.
Doing a quick calculation - if I deleted all of these warnings (registry
items) the sum total of items deleted would exceed the size of the registry.

    What gives??

Maybe it uses the Norton Internet Security method, by making your computer
using experieince so slow and pointless as to stop you using the computer as
    much.
