May be of interest to AVG 8 users...

"potentially dangerous" entries in my registry, specifically under
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatability
    http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/re...,backpage=,sv=

"just so you know- avg 8.0 free and pro has an incompatibility issue
with spybwareblaster and spybot search and destroy. If you see the
ie/compatablility active x registry keys, it is because these programs
use this type of scripting to stop active x in registry keys.
A lot of discussion on wilders security forums are about this and I
spoke to a representative at AVG Technologies, because i too am getting
them and i am a reseller for AVG and do not need all my clients
    panicking when they see these.
The tech told me as long as they are in the "warning" tab to just ignore
them. Some have found if you remove them to the virus vault then delete
them, wierd things start happing with Windows.
Javacool who makes spywareblaster is suppose to talk to AVG Technologies
    and figure this out."

Having upgraded to the AVG Free 8.0., I recently uninstalled SpyBot S&D,
and my computer is now running much faster than before, with no hangs.

When I ran the AVG 8.0 scan, it found about 130 warnings, which got moved
to the virus vault. Better safe than sorry. But then I read the FAQ,
and realized AVG is incompatible with SpyBot, SpywareBlaster, etc., so I
got rid of them. Now my XP2 machine has only AVG Free 8.0 and the Comodo
freeware "Firewall Pro" to protect it. So far, so good.

But until we see the first anti-malware comparison reports, we won't really
know if the AVG Free 8.0 anti-spyware component is working as advertised.
The other way would be if my Internet browser got "hijacked", but I do a
lot of web browsing, and so far everything appears to be normal, knock on
    wood.

Glad I stuck with 7.5 then. I did download 8.0 but never installed it. I
use Spywareblaster and Spybot so don't need the aggor of AVG giving
    false warnings.

I guess it comes down to what the end-user considers to be more important,
    anti-virus, or anti-spyware? I know they're both important, but I'm pretty
sure that anti-virus is more important. In fact I know it is. You should
read through all the improvements to AVG Free 8.0. According to the
manufacturer, it's a lot better than the old AVG Free 7.5. And my computer is
running so much faster and smoother since I uninstalled S&D and SpywareBlaster,
I can't imagine why anyone would opt out of the AVG freeware upgrade?

Maybe it uses the Norton Internet Security method, by making your computer
using experieince so slow and pointless as to stop you using the computer as
    much.

The average user now encounters variants of spyware probably more then
    viruses....

Well duh, the 'new' one is always better according to the manufacturer.

Because, quite frankly it is awful, it is slow, it is unresponsive, it
insists on scanning on a daily basis, and takes five hours to do the scan.
While the scan engine is running it sucks 100% of resources....

Try installing avg 8.0 on an older machine, you will see why. I could quite
confidently take norton 06/07/08 off a win xp machine with 256/512 mb of
memory, and replace it with avg 7.0/7.5 and see a visible and clear
improvement in speed of a system. That is no longer the case.

I will ahve to start using Avira Antivir, i am trying it out now, so far ok,
    seems pretty limited though.

I think you are an AVG employee using an anon remailer. The layered
approach to spyware is the best approach so trusting just AVG for
spyware scans and dumping Spybot and Spywareblaster (two progs I have
been using for years now and trust) is just dumb. I would upgrade to
ver. 8.0 but not if it causes issues for those two other anti-spyware
progs. They should fix the issue and then I will start using it.

I never run any AV software with a resident shield for this reason. If
they don't have an option to disable the resident shield I don't use it.
I would never trust any AV software to heal an infected machine either.
All they are good for is reporting if you have a virus or not. If it
reports positive then you wipe the drive and re-install the OS. Or
preferably just restore an image file using a prog like Acronis True
Image. I scan all files I download and now and again do a system scan.
Never been infected yet but that is because I know how to set up my PC
with some pre-emptive protection. I don't need a resident AV prog
slowing my web browsing down to the speed of a 486 when I pay big bucks
    for a fast PC.

Well, if ver. 8.0 doesn't allow me to tailor what modules it loads into
memory then I will switch to something else like Avast. Avast is
reported to have better detection of virus than AVG anyway. Thing is I
like AVG 7.5 because it is very customizable and light on resources and
that is why I choose to use it. I've read NOD32 is the best for not
using much in the way of resources and is good at detection but you have
to pay for it. I only use AVG because it is free and I am a cheap
    bastage.
