AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

I run AVG free and have the machine automatically check for updates. I
noticed today that people on this list have been talking about a free vers.
    8. I checked mine and it's vers 7.5.524. My machine hasn't automatically
updated??? I did a manual update and it says I am updated.

I clicked on the link to Grisoft that you folks mentioned and there is a
free version 8 available. Also, just noted when I go to "Control Center"
that it tells me a version 8 is available but linking to it gives me the
option to get a vers 8 that one must pay for.
What gives? When I "Check for Updates" why doesn't it tell me that the free
program has an update available. I suspect I'm missing something here and
    would appreciate some guidance.

Is the free version 8 just a free antivirus program? Is the version 8 that
one pays for, something more, i.e. "internet security?" The page that one
links to from my program has a table that compares vers. 8 to free vers.
    7.5.

I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth but wouldn't it be nice if
the update feature on the free version of AVG antivirus would tell me there
is a newer version of the program, not just newer versions of the virus
    definitions.......or does it?

    Thanks.

    Carl

Re: AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

Found the link, downloaded it, installed it, seems to work. Perhaps my
area of most confusion was re: Why didn't my check for automatic updates
via version 7.5.524 tell me there was a newer version? Do I need to keep
glued to this newsgroup (which I probably do anyhow) to find out when vers.
9 comes out? One would think that the program would do that for me.

    Thanks.

Version 8 is not an update. It is a new version. You can continue with V7+
if you wish. V8 is free the samw as V7.

Re: AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

Even when I was using the 7.5 version, after every update, I would get a
pop-up type window that told me that ver 8 was available. (but never gave a
link to the free version - someone in another group supplied a link)
    Did you not get this????
    I was driving me crackers.

Besides that I had to reboot the pertooter after *every* update.

I surrendered & downloaded the ver8 - so far so good.

Re: AVG Free version update to vers. 8 ???

Never got any notice from the program that a version 8 was available. I
just noted some comments about it on this newsgroup. I ran "update" on my
program and it told me all was up-to-date. I went to the company's web
site, saw it there, and downloaded it and installed it. My installed
program, 7.5. never told me about it.

I never got a popuup window after updating. I do run popup blockers but
they usually tell me that a web site tried to pop something up. If it were
the home page for AVG, I would have let it through.

I got an occasional reboot request, not when virus definitions were the
    only update.

Version 8 by the way is awful, it has a much greater footprint then avg7.5,
the scanning engine is much much slower, it is sluggish and adds
considerable time to boot up. I would no longer recommend AVG for an older
machine (less then 1gb and slower then dual core).

It scans for spyware too and not just virus now so that is probably why.

What peeves me about the new release .....

I did a full scan, both at high and slow speeds and it detected *over*
10,000 (yes ten thousand) references to CoolWebSearch plus assorted other
nasties. Yet reported *none* of them being critical.
All of these were references in the registry.

My up to date version of SpyBot Search and Destroy plus a couple of other
scanners that I use reported nothing!!!

Any thoughts on what is going on???
