    Laptop Power Cords

Hello, currently I am trying to help a friend via email figure out what's wrong with his emachines-n10 laptop. From what I can tell, it seems to be a problem with the ac adapter, the problem is that the replacement costs $50, which seems a but much. I looked around online and found [edit link removed]this, which seems to be the cheapest you can buy it.

However, after further searching, I also managed to find [edit link removed]this cord for a more recent notebook which is a lot cheaper, has more power, and appears to have the same input.

I know a lot about computers, but I've done very little work with laptops so I'm not very experienced with this kind of thing. So I was just wondering if the second, cheaper could would be compatible with his laptop or would he be stuck buying the one that was designed specifically to work with it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello pharrox, welcome to networktechs.com, I can't recommend anything other than the direct replacement part from the manufacture, it's no fun to get the wrong part/s and have those parts cause issues. The reason is that those power cords also charge the batteries. If the power adapter has the wrong power output level, phase or frequency, it could cause problems with the laptops internal circuits.. If you are feeling secure enough to just match the power requirements listed in the MFG's book, or website, there are a number of "universal" power adapters that might fit the bill.. I can suggest having the batteries tested to ensure that they are holding a charge and not taxing the charging circuit/power adapter, if they don't hold a charge, it might be time for new batteries. If you can't diagnose the issue with what you have on hand, software/power function etc and if the laptop is still under waranty, have your buddy send it in for waranty repair/checkup.
